Peanut Butter and Jam sandwiches are now "racist"
Portland Tribune ^ | September 05, 2012 | Jennifer Anderson

Verenice Gutierrez picks up on the subtle language of racism every day.

Take the peanut butter sandwich, a seemingly innocent example a teacher used in a lesson last school year.

“What about Somali or Hispanic students, who might not eat sandwiches?” says Gutierrez, principal at Harvey Scott K-8 School, a diverse school of 500 students in Northeast Portland’s Cully neighborhood.

They keep telling us diversity is a “joy,” but the more diversity we have, the less freedom we seem to have and the more we have to walk on eggshells. I must be missing the “joy” somehow.

What this really means is that they are scrambling to find yet more excuses for low test scores among some minorities.

They have peremptorily ruled out any possibility of
1. low intelligence
2. lack of effort
3. inferior culture that discourages achievement

These ridiculous excuses are used to buttress self-esteem (I’m really smarter than test score indicate.) and encourage a victim mentality (”The man” is keeping me down.). Neither the students nor the teachers have to expend much effort to really get / provide an education.

But most of all, these excuses allow the teachers unions to hire ever more teachers, teachers’ aides, curriculum developers, experts, advisers, policy directors, administrators, and managers of special programs to deal with this. In addition, they get to buy new, non-racist textbooks and get kickbacks from the textbook companies.

Yes. There was a complaint about milk back in the day when the dairy industry had an ad campaign “Every body loves milk”. It was said to be inappropriate, or racist because some African-Americans (or a large number perhaps) have an intolerance to milk or dairy, ergo, EVERY body does not love milk. None of this will end until the rest of us say, NO, just stop this now.

I’ve always heard of Peanut Butter and Jelly(never have liked it), but never “Peanut Butter and Jam”. Am I just missing something?

Me neither. At the end of the article, we learn that she's an anchor baby from Texas. You show me a Texan who hasn't eaten a peanut butter and JELLY sandwich. At her age, I'm sure her mama packed her lunch with them so don't even try to sell me that hispanic kids don't eat pb&js.

But how can it be? Wasn’t it George Washington Carver who invented the peanut agricultural science? So how can that be racists?

Racial equity is a top focus for the school and district.

I'm glad she cleared that up for me; I had been wondering what their priorities were, since it's obvious that "educating students" is way down at the bottom of their list.

Just to clarify my last comment:

Despite that year of work, Oregon’s Department of Education just last month identified Scott as a “focus school,” one that performs among the state’s lowest 15 percent.

“I’m excited by the fact that we’re designated a focus school by the state,” Gutierrez says. “It’s an added layer of accountability.”

This is akin to Obama's people being "excited" that more & more people are getting food stamps, "because it helps the economy".

Letters to this principal, or to the school, are waste of time.
The School District Board, on the other hand...

I once knew someone that liked to eat Peanut Butter sandwiches with Mayonnaise and bananas. That’s just disgusting, IMO!

Ewww; you're right! They left out the pickles!

I recently discovered peanut butter, bacon, hot dogs. There’s some yum. Sadly, I later discovered it wasn’t an original idea. There are actually restaurants that serve them.

“This guy took 3 pieces of bread, one large white onion, and a half jar of peanut butter to make a sandwich.
It was a mess.”

A knife would have helped!

I'm speechless - It a joke - it never occurred to me that milk could be racist. People have to move past scoring points based on who's most pathetic... "Thin-skinned" should be an insult not a badge of honor.
