Chicago Teachers Vote to Continue Strike By STEPHANIE BANCHERO

The Chicago public school teachers strike entered its second week after the teachers union declined Sunday to call off a week-long walkout that has catapulted the city into the national debate over teacher evaluations and job security.

Only hours earlier, Chicago Teachers Union officials had trumpeted new concessions they said they had extracted from Mayor Rahm Emanuel during talks to settle the strike that started last Monday and has canceled classes for 350,000 students in the nation's third largest district.

The vote to continue the strike came Sunday night by the union's governing body, the house of delegates, after its members looked over the tentative deal negotiated by city and union leaders. The proposed contract had been finalized earlier in the day, giving the 700-member group little time to digest its details.

Union president Karen Lewis said delegates were "not happy" with the agreement and told union membership they needed a day to consult with rank-and-file teachers.

The delegates will meet again on Tuesday. "They would like it to be a lot better for us," she said.

Ms. Lewis said the earliest students could be back in school is Wednesday.

The vote came a day after the union sent out a statement late Saturday highlighting its successes in the talks, including scaling back the mayor's attempt to base 40% of teacher evaluations on student test scores. The tentative deal would base only 30% on student test scores, according to the union, a ratio already dictated by state law.

“I will not stand by while the children of Chicago are played as pawns in an internal dispute within a union. (They need to be indoctrinated regularly, least they see reality) This was a strike of choice and is now a delay of choice that is wrong for our children.(see above doctrine)... Every day our kids are kept out of school is one more day we fail in our mission:(op. cit) to ensure that every child in every community has an education that matches their potential,”(“From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs”.) They have teachers wearing Che t-shirts like he was some sort of hero.

It is unbelievable that a state executioner can become a cultural icon.

MSNBC would say that because that is what they want the public to believe. If it is MSNBC, it has nothing to do with facts, just political spin.

You are told wrong. Chicago teachers average 76 Gs per year. Not a high salary for a college graduate in general.

For your information many of the surrounding suburbs make about a third more. Not a princely sum, either, unless you are The Disaster.

Don’t fall for the Class War here.

No one could teach the Welfare Class. You can’t blame the teachers for the material they are dealing with. Destroyed families with out of control kids are the main reason these scores are low.

Any bets the union will ignore any injunction? Or they play in the courts for a week until the strike is settled.

He should start hiring people who want to teach....remember Reagan and the controllers....these teachers probably have tenure....well fire them anyway with out pay...

Ohhhhh would I LOVE to see the liberal union heads popping as well as the entire socialist RAT demoRAT party if Rahm did this. I would actually be pulling for Rahm.

I would love to see the strikers then take to the streets in riotous fashion. What would the union Chicago police do? Would they attack their union teacher counterparts? After all they are all ravaging & plundering the same gubmint feeding trough? I would love to see Chicago in a complete anarchist meltdown. What would 0dumb0 do?

Lets just say it sounds believable. I see no Chicago parents on FNC or anywhere else outraged. Their schools are worse than most for a reason.

....an education that matches their potential,” Emanuel said..

An education that matches their potential? ROFLMAO!!!

What education is that? How to put condoms on, or how to become a homosexual? 60% of these Chicago "yutes" wouldn't even be able to locate the USA on a world globe. Their reading skills are atrocious, they can barely do simple math addition or subtraction, and their science, history or English skills are atrocious.

Persanally I be hoping the striek continues thru the entirr skool yier.
