Live Thread: Romney to Speak to Press Tonight About '47% Video' Comments
Monday, September 17, 2012 | Kristinn

Political reporters on Twitter are saying they are standing by for a Romney media availability on the video released today by Mother Jones of Romney at a May fundraiser speaking frankly of his thoughts on Obama's base voters and their entitlement mentality, aka the 47% who pay no federal income taxes.

The media and GOP-E have jumped ugly on Romney tonight.

Steve Holland, Reuters: Romney at press avail to respond to video says his comments weren't "elegantly stated," and "could have said it in a more effective way."

Great reply,

My concern is how a large part of the Independents will see this:

1. Racist
2. Heartless
3. Envious

And then there are those who FEEL guilty.

The MSM will play all the angles.

I would like Mitt to hold his ground and push the narrative to the Socialist vs. Free market argument.

Right now this story is the main lead on Drudge, with the headline "Romney Gets Real." Follow the link and it takes you to the Politics blog of the NY Times. I read the first dozen or so comments following the article and about 75% of them agreed with Romney.

Of course, this is all the media will talk about for the next week. They think they can kill two birds with one stone: portray Romney as "uncaring," while diverting attention from Obama's Middle East mess. Romney should stick to his guns and go on the offensive.

“Should the working poor be made to pay fed taxes? “

Yes. Some. At a minimum, they should not get back more than they paid...

I would like Mitt to hold his ground and push the narrative to the Socialist vs. Free market argument.

Hard for him to do, since he himself is a socialist, and defends every major socialist program since the New Deal.

A new York slimes comment sect and the majority agreed with Romney? That is great news..see libs dont want to have this debate because the majority of americans don’t want to rely on the govt to take care of them..they want to take care of themselves and their families..not have mommy and daddy govt doing it for them..Romney should have been saying this to everyone not just to donor..I hope he starts spreading this message because it will help him in the endl

Obama October 2008 speaking to donors:

“You go into these small towns in Pennsylvania and, like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing’s replaced them. And it’s not surprising, then, they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.”

Here is the audio

I think Romney is trying to point out it's socialism (no jobs) vs free enterprise, free market capitalism (jobs). He's going to have to come out swinging and start calling Obama a socialist and discuss his communist roots, training and mentors. This is about two different visions and our survival as a constitutional republic. We are at War!

How about passing out 300 million of these?:

Certainly, Mitt is nowhere near my first choice.

However, I have to be pragmatic at this time.

This could be a defining moment and we will have to see how it plays out.

Mitt has a golden opportunity with something that was designed to hurt him. The ball is in his hands.

I can only hope he stands tall, not only with this issue, but as the next President.

This may be our last chance, before we as a nation vote for our own demise.

Kansas is right - everything flows to 1040.

Doesn’t matter if you have schedule A, B, C, D, whatever. The aggregate of all of that will appear on 1040.

Capital gains IS income, it’s just taxed at different rate.

Formula is:

Income (Broadly conceived, this means everything, EVERYTHING)
minus Exclusions (such as child support)
= Gross income
Gross income MINUS deduction for adjusted gross income
= Adjusted gross income (AGI) (bottom of 1040)
AGI - standard deduction - exemptions = TAXABLE INCOME.

Everything is included on 1040. You have to file additional forms for different type of income, but they all flow to 1040.

He’s talking about those who make government dependence a career.

Certainly, Mitt is nowhere near my first choice.

Mitt Romney, the first major political party presidential nominee in history that practically no one will admit voting for, even before the general election has occurred.

How can you tell it's an EBT card? Don't they make them look like "regular" credit/debit cards to "mask the shame" of welfare?

I do see a lot more folks paying with multiple cards/cash combo, though....now that you mention it.

Listen.

I voted for Ross Perot.

If we could really get, a real Conservative through the process, I am with you.

In the meantime, I will admit that I SUPPORT Mitt Romney.

The clerk said (to the holder) that it was an EBT card.

The process to which you refer is rigged. Even more so now that Romney Republicans own it.

Now what?

You’re going to give your franchise to liberals permanently?

People on Social Security are not takers — they had money taken from them, without their consent all their working lives. The government is the taker.

Megga BUMP!

I get so pissed when Soc Sec is lumped in with all the pure handouts and referred to as an "entitlement."

Should the working poor be made to pay fed taxes?

Yes. Some.

That should go over well.

Are all low income employees who don't make enough to pay fed taxes, receiving government assistance?
