Yunel Escobar suspended by Blue Jays for wearing eye black with anti-gay slur

The Toronto Blue Jays suspended Yunel Escobar for three games on Tuesday after he wore eye-black tape inscribed with an anti-gay slur during Saturday’s game at the Rogers Centre. The salary forfeited by Escobar during his suspension will go to You Can Play and the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation.
“Honestly it’s been a terrible experience in my life and career,” Escobar said through a translator. “It’s something I’m sorry for and something I won’t do again.”
The player said he was embarrassed by his actions.
“It was just a joke,” Escobar said through the translator. “It was my idea but it wasn’t directed at anyone in particular.”
Escobar said he has friends who are gay and has nothing against homosexuals.

Given that Escobar is an important part of Toronto’s offense, I would be upset were I in Baltimore or Tampa. This gives the Yankees a rather significant advantage over the Orioles and Rays the next three games.
