Monsanto Roundup weedkiller and GM maize implicated in ‘shocking’ new cancer study
The Grocer UK ^ | Septembe 19, 2012 | Elinor Zuke

The world’s best-selling weedkiller, and a genetically modified maize resistant to it, can cause tumours, multiple organ damage and lead to premature death, new research published today reveals.

In the first ever study to examine the long-term effects of Monsanto’s Roundup weedkiller, or the NK603 Roundup-resistant GM maize also developed by Monsanto, scientists found that rats exposed to even the smallest amounts, developed mammary tumours and severe liver and kidney damage as early as four months in males, and seven months for females, compared with 23 and 14 months respectively for a control group.

“This research shows an extraordinary number of tumours developing earlier and more aggressively -particularly in female animals. I am shocked by the extreme negative health impacts,” said Dr Michael Antoniou, molecular biologist at King’s College London

...GM crops have been approved for human consumption on the basis of 90-day animal feeding trials. But three months is the equivalent of late adolescence in rats, who can live for almost two years (700 days), and there have long been calls to study the effects over the course of a lifetime.

I’ve lived in Roundup country since the early 80s.
Worse than that I’ve mixed it, sprayed it, and inhaled it.

I guess I’m toast.....

May help explain cancer rates in US..from article

Some 85% of maize grown in the US is GM, while 70% of processed foods contain GM ingredients without GM labelling. In the UK and Europe GM maize is not consumed directly by humans but is widely used in animal feed without the requirement for GM labelling.

Linked at Drudge, France orders probe after rat study links GM corn, cancer

France's government on Wednesday asked a health watchdog to carry out a probe, possibly leading to EU suspension of a genetically-modified corn, after a study in rats linked the grain to cancer...

Saline water also causes cancer when injected under the skins of rats.

They won’t know anything till they study this in higher forms of mammals.

Rats make good test subjects for curing cancer but are very poor test subjects for investigating the causes of cancer.

heard of an Amish guy who bought some GM corn for some of his livestock. Threw it out in the woods and said the deer wouldn’t eat it.

I’ve been warning FReepers of the dangers of RoundUp for 10 years on this forum, after a prior study showing that pregnant women exposed to it have children who develop “ambiguous sexual organs” (sounds lovely, eh?). Now this. If you use RoundUp around your house and let your kids play there, you are bonkers. You’d be better off spraying them with Agent Orange.

What the heck? I sounds like they have some cancerous rats.

I wonder if the tests were done in California. Everything causes cancer in California.

Is there any pesticide available that's not carcinogenic? I stopped using any of them years ago after my then 5 y/o son was diagnosed with a soft-tissue cancer.

To this day, we don't know what caused his cancer, but there's no ornamental or food crop that I'll use any chemicals on. My tomatoes and peppers are doing fine - I choose disease resistant (mostly heirloom) varieties.

What were they doing to these rats to cause 30% tumors in the control group?

Yet a whole lot of our public policy is based on rat based science.

While other scientists at Kings College, London, pointed out that the particular strain of rat used in the study was very prone to tumors when fed an unrestricted diet.

And the question has been raised why American life spans are increasing despite the consumption of GM maize (corn).

Everything is not always as it appears at first glance.
