Hey, Luv.

(((HUGS)))

Lots of wallerin' music tonight. In a bit I'll post his First Piano Concerto, and you ought to sit down sometime during the next week and just waller in that gorgeous sound. He was the greatest composer of the 20th Century for just plain old wallerin'.

One of the best themes ever written by Henry Mancini. This was during the era when Henry and Andy Barber, the head of the music department at Universal, would sneak off the lot and play hooky at Santa Anita during racing season.

Henry Mancini was simply the best and I was so sad when he was taken so soon.

I thought this was an interesting interpretation of his great
theme! :)

In 1890, the 17 year old Sergei Rachmaninov wrote a short, simple and brooding piece for piano and cello.

It’s not that often that a conservatory student writes a full piano concerto. It’s less often he thinks that it’s good enough to publish as his Opus 1. It’s even rarer that he gets a hit out of it that establishes him as a composer of significant rank. But that’s exactly what the 17 year old Sergei Rachmaninov did in 1890. This piece was published in 1892 and then revised in 1917 when the composer was 44, and it’s this final version that has stood the test of time. It opens with a short introduction that sets up a theme that sounds like the wind whistling over the Russian steppes. You can just feel the cold! The second subject appears at 2:48 with the orchestra providing full accompaniment this first time through. The recap begins at 6:54. When the second subject returns at 8:32, it is accompanied primarily by a solo violin. Grab your hankies for that moment! At 9:27, he wraps up with a cadenza in the grand style.

The second movement at 12:27 is a heartfelt love song in D Major.

The third movement at 18:55 shows Sergei working on his idea of how to structure a finale. At 21:00 he writes something memorable and very commercial, a technique he was to use to great effect in his next concerto. At 25:19 he sets up a joyous coda.

Catch all those Rachmaninov photographs in this video!

There are two ways to address Post #55. The pictures of Rachmaninov are worth a view of the video.

But the best way to waller in that sound is to pour yourself a hot bath, put something fragrant in the water, and pour yourself a glass of a fine red wine. The warmth will counter the chill of the Russian steppes.
