A 55-year-old French hunter who had to have his right hand amputated after his dog accidentally shot him said Monday he didn't blame the pet, which he still considered "adorable".
The hunter, identified only as René, told France Bleu radio the dog accidentally pulled the trigger of his shotgun when he jumped on him while they were hunting Sunday in the Dordogne region.
René said he was hunting with three dogs when two of them ran off after a deer while the youngest stayed behind.
"He jumped on top of me for a cuddle" and accidentally fired the gun, shooting him in the right hand, René said.
The hunter was taken by helicopter to a hospital in Bordeaux but the damage was too serious and the hand had to be amputated.
"It wasn't the dog's fault," René insisted. "And he's adorable! I should have left the (gun's) safety on, that's all."
Well, shouldn’t you keep the safety on until you’re ready to aim and fire? Costly mistake not to remember.
It’s news only if the man had bitten the dog.
He needs to train his dog not to jump up on him.
Bad firearms training + poor dog training = tragic accident
Well, sad story, but clearly an accident.
Had it involved a cat, however...
Make sure the recon team doesn’t see this.
Tell me.
The recon team picture was posted in 1999 when I joined FR. Sadly, three of the team members have passed on since then. Only the one I have my hand on in the picture survives.
There are new recon team members though.

Considering how long the barrels are on most shotguns, I wondering how the hell he had his right hand in front of the muzzle to begin with.
The only scenario I can imagine is that he had the butt on the ground and had his right hand around the muzzle of the loaded and off-safe gun! If that’s what happened, he’s lucky he didn’t shoot himself in the bottom of the chin too.
Which reminds me of a story I heard from Vietnamese national who was working for the US Army during the Vietnam War. The tale he told was that a friend of his riding in the back of deuce and a half with his M16 between his legs, muzzle-up, butt on the floorboards, gun off-safe when they hit a dump and gun went off. Entry wound under the chin, exit wound through the nose.

Is the dog a German Shepherd?
