During his first run for president, Barack Obama made one very specific promise to voters: He would cut health insurance premiums for families by $2,500, and do so in his first term.
But it turns out that family premiums have increased by more than $3,000 since Obama's vow, according to the latest annual Kaiser Family Foundation employee health benefits survey.
Premiums for employer-provided family coverage rose $3,065 24% from 2008 to 2012, the Kaiser survey found. Even if you start counting in 2009, premiums have climbed $2,370.
What's more, premiums climbed faster in Obama's four years than they did in the previous four under President Bush, the survey data show.
There's no question about what Obama was promising the country, since he repeated it constantly during his 2008 campaign.
In a debate with Sen. John McCain, for example, Obama said "the only thing we're going to try to do is lower costs so that those cost savings are passed onto you. And we estimate we can cut the average family's premium by about $2,500 per year."
At a campaign stop in Columbus, Ohio, in February 2008, Obama promised that "We are going to work with you to lower your premiums by $2,500. We will not wait 20 years from now to do it, or 10 years from now to do it. We will do it by the end of my first term as president."

Like Al Jolson used to say.
YOU AINT SEEN NOTHING YET.
The Bama boy is just getting started. His crap Obamacare hasn’t even gotten off to a good start yet.
A government program that costs more than what a democrat politician said it would cost...
We will never learn I guess, not at least until it's too late.
He also said he’d lower the ocean levels and cut the deficit in half...
And people fell for it!
But.. but.. he’s trying.
Was just discussing this article over on FB.
My family works for CSC, and we just found out our
costs are going up 72%; or we can choose the CDHP
that’s basically a castrophic plan.
We may be forced into the catastrophic, as the
prescription plan is better.
The presription part in the higher plan is a
nightmare for me - I have no pituitary glad -
the costs are amazing for non-generic and non-
formulary drugs - and most of the drugs
I take are non-generic; the generics are seriously inferior.
My middle class family (under 100K) has been hit
with a tax increase of at least $7000.
Like I said on November 5, 2008. We are screwed. We f***ing screwed. Was I ever right.
“My family works for CSC, and we just found out our
costs are going up 72%”
I’ve not seen info for my plan yet for next year. How are they justifying the increase?
To clarify my earlier post, the extra costs are for
deductibles and co-pays and increased drug costs.
And I mean the prescription costs in the
higher priced plan are atrocious - $40 minimum copay
for formulary, $80 for non.
I wonder what happens if the drug costs less than
the minimum.
Results are meaningless, intention is all that matters!
They are not justifying it. They call it
‘A New Direction for You and CSC’.
‘To better align our programs with CSC’s ongoing
transformation and long-term business plan,
as well as to be responsive to
federal healthcare reform and escalating
healthcare costs, we are implementing a new
strategy for US employees in 2013.’
‘We are working to improve efficiency, reduce cost
(for CSC I take it), eliminate administrative
burden by consolidating, standardizing and
simplifying our healthcare benefit offerings.
IOW - we’re giving you a choice between a crap sandwich
and a rotten egg because it costs us less.
They are offering ‘Healthy Behaviors’ program, at a
lower premium with high deductible and a nanny component.
They have made the premiums salary-based, we pay more
than someone making less.
No justifying, just here it is.
I wonder if they will continue to share what the
company pays for the plans.
I imagine I’ll be seeing the same thing... :(
We signed up with a catastrophic plan last year. This year, my son had to have surgery, and so did I, so we will meet our $5000 (yes, five thousand dollar) deductible. Not saving any money, but the premium was cheeper. Maybe next year will be better.
Donald, If you work for CSC, I think so..
Sport, exactly. We may have to take the
catastrophic because the drug costs are
less, the premium is less, the deductible
is high. It’s the drugs that will make the
difference for us, I think - still running the numbers.
Sorry to hear about your hospital stay, but yes,
hopefully next year will be better, and
The Most High and Holy Royal Princess Barry will be
GONE!!!
bump
“Health Premiums Up $3,000”
Forward!
Those darn republicans stopped him during his first 2 years don’t ya know..
what? His party had full control of everything?
What’s his excuse again?
I wonder what happens if the drug costs less than
the minimum.
the insurance co pays nothing ;)
I feel for you Brother. Those of us who buy insurance are the ones getting screwed in this mess.
Obamacare is a friggin joke, but it aint funny.
