Romney, In Shift, Says Obama Has Not Raised Taxes

By Seema Mehta

September 25 VANDALIA, Ohio — Mitt Romney said Tuesday that President Obama did not raise taxes during his first term, contradicting a constant attack he has leveled on Obama — that his healthcare plan was a tax increase.

“I admit this, he has one thing he did not do in his first four years — he’s said he’s going to do in the next four years — which is to raise taxes. And is there anyone who thinks raising taxes will help grow the economy? No!” Romney told thousands gathered at a chilly tarmac rally. “His plan is to continue what he’s done before. The status quo has not worked. We cannot afford four more years of Barack Obama. We’re not going to have four more years of Barack Obama.”

Maybe the idiots are those that take the LA Times at face value.

The governor has repeatedly pointed out that President Obama has raised taxes, in addition to increasing federal spending," said advisor Kevin Madden. "The governor was specifically referring to President Obama's promise to raise income taxes in a second term, which would also impact small businesses."

“...contradicting a constant attack he has leveled on Obama — that his healthcare plan was a tax increase.”

There’s no contradiction - Obamacare introduces new taxes and increases others, but not until 2013, which was by design. The dems wanted to postpone the pain until after the election.

So Romney is correct but the media will spin it as usual to help the messiah.

“No people, the polls are NOT skewed ... we just have a blithering idiot for a nominee.”

Since you’re so smart, maybe you can fill us in on which taxes have gone up.

Romney is 100% right - Obamacare contains a lot of taxes, but they won’t go into effect until 2013 - by design - so the pain won’t come until after the election.

Yes Obama has wanted to raise taxes all along, but the republicans in congress have done him a favor by stopping him. So now he can claims that he hasn’t raised taxes.

If Romney is saying obama did not raise taxes, then it will appear that Romney is saying he is going to.

Had you bothered to read what Mittens said:

"And is there anyone who thinks raising taxes will help grow the economy? No!” Romney told thousands gathered at a chilly tarmac rally."

For the sake of argument -- and thereby leaving aside the emphatic "NO!" -- how could one possibly read into that statement that Romney is going to raise taxes?

We’re less than a hundred days from massive scheduled tax hikes.

Those aren't Obama tax increases; they're the expiration of the Bush tax cuts. For the life of me, I don't remember why Bush, with a GOP controlled House AND Senate, put expiration dates on those tax cuts. There must have been a reason, but I'm getting old and memory fades....

However, Obama is *not* increasing income taxes next year. Those are GWB expirations. But when the ObamaCare tax increases take effect in 2014, the Muslim-in-Chief will have full ownership of those.

Romney said Obama is going to raise taxes in his next four years. Romeny also said that is not the way to grow the economy. Re read the quote again.

Does [Romney] even really want to win? I’m getting to where I doubt it.

I used to think that doubting Romney's desire to win was crazy talk, woo-woo conspiracy theory stuff. But no more. If you assume that he wants to win, then the way he speaks and runs his campaign makes no sense. I don't pretend to have any idea why someone would take the trouble to get nominated for president if he didn't want to make it to the White House, though. Anything I could suggest would be rank speculation.

If memory serves, it’s because the Bush tax cuts were passed under budget reconciliation rules, which require time limits. The reason for using reconciliation was that Republicans had nowhere near 60 votes, and reconciliation requires only a simple majority.v

The GOP statist elites decided it was Romney’s turn just like they decided it was Bob dole’s in ‘96 and McCain’s ‘08.

He doesn’t act like he wants to fight for the job, just like McCain AND Dole didn’t fight hard either. And Lord, do we need a fighter right now.

First of all, he’s talking about raising income taxes. Now, because some schmo at the LA Times says, oh gotcha, you’ve changed your tune about raising taxes, people on this thread run for the fields. People are not as ignorant as you think that are and plainly people know Obama didn’t raise income taxes - they see their checks. What he’s telling you, me and the crowd, is the one EVIL thing he didn’t do in his first four years - but plans to do if he gets another term - is to raise income taxes.

Either the people on this thread are incredibly young and have never seen the media sycophants spin every statement a Republican utters, or you’re a bunch of trolls. Either way, calm down. The adults are taking over again. The media is losing it’s clout to the point of being a close second to lawyers. Worry about getting your Republican and conservative friends to the polls. Throw a voting happy hour, do something other than stare at the screen for every possible twist the media will try to perform.

If Romney meant Income Tax he would have said Income Tax. If he refers to ObamaCare as a tax then he would have to admit he raised taxes in Ma. with his RomneyCare.

Why should Romney not raise taxes?

He should raise taxes and start raising them immediately upon entering office on the 47% that pay NO taxes.

I pay my “fair share” and these free loaders and moochers need to start paying theirs
