Far East: Wars have started over less weighty issues than the sovereignty of islands in the East China Sea called Senkaku in Japan and Diaoyu in China.
They are barely rocks above water, but they sit atop valuable resources and are rapidly becoming a flash point as a rising power confronts one whose sun has set.
These islands have become involved in a three-way tug of war between China, Taiwan and Japan with each sending fishing boats, even armed vessels, to the area. Private boats from Japan recently journeyed to the Senkakus to plant the Japanese flag one more time.
The Senkaku Islands are not only rich fishing areas. They also have significant oil deposits vital to a China scouring the world for energy for its growing economy.
Possession of these uninhabited rocks would be the basis for declaring an exclusive economic zone around the islands.

I believe this is true of the United States as well.
A few years back that statement would have astonished me but since I've been living in this "Obamanation" for over three years it not only doesn't surprise me, I expect it.
And "that" is very scary and depressing when I think about it.
That photo of four Russian warships that the Democrats accidentally displayed at their convention to back up one of their speeches, just happens to be the entire Russian Far East Fleet -- all four surface combatants left to answer Putin's call.
Four ships. That's it. No, really.
The rest are honey barges, harbor patrol craft, and such. The major ships are all gone, all but these four.
The Japanese experience with trying to train up significant numbers of new naval aviation pilots in 1942-3 after their big losses in the battles of 1942 (when they lost almost their entire 1941 roster of experienced carrier-air flight crewmen and pilots) was dismal. Even with their acute need, they had to stop the practice landings on moored aircraft carriers -- they were just killing pilots.
They had plenty of experience with carrier operations. They just needed pilots -- they'd lost them all in combat. And they just couldn't train them properly under wartime conditions.
Wow that is amazing. I never heard that.
That trend has continues, but it is very slow growth. OBama though, is defunding future research needs. The ships we are building now are already funded by law.
Romney has insisted that he will revuild our military and I believe him. he has gone so far to state that the will restart the F-22 line...which would be great. We stopped building the best aircraft in the world...by far...at only 187 aircraft.
