Ryder Cup 2012: Europe beat USA after record comeback
BBC Sport ^ | 1st October 2012 | Tom Fordyce

'Europe's golfers produced a stunning final-day comeback to win the Ryder Cup at a shell-shocked Medinah.

With the United States requiring only four points from the 12 on offer, Europe somehow secured eight and a half to clinch a historic 14½-13½ win.

Martin Kaymer sank a five-foot putt on the 18th green to get his team to the 14 points needed to retain the trophy, before a Tiger Woods bogey in the final match gifted them overall victory.

The win matches the record recovery of Ben Crenshaw's US team in Boston in 1999 and is the best from a European side in the Ryder Cup.

It was a fitting tribute to the late Seve Ballesteros, the man who did so much to reinvigorate the competition and whose trademark colours the side wore on the final day.'

17 and 18 were a nightmare all day. The Euros capitalized.

Unbelievable, just incredible.

What a comeback, Europe deserve the victory for that immense last day charge. The Americans didnt know what hit them and most of the US team just went to pieces.

The perfect microcosm of Obama’s America. Seems now that only successful US athletes are the women.

The Euros went for the jugular and the US team just melted.
They seem to have thought they’d already won it and the pressure went against them unlike the first two days.

Game wise, the US putting was by and large awful. Furyk took forever to putt and still put them all wide or short.

Couldn’t believe how badly Stricker missed that long putt on 18. He just totally misread it.

GOLF PING:

This was hard to watch. They always said there would never be another come from behind win like Brookline. But, Ian Poulter set the stage with his play and enthusiasm yesterday.

I really felt bad for Stricker and Furyk today, but win or lose - it's a team event and they don't own the loss any more than Martin Kaymer owns the Cup.

The loss is on Tiger....he was the only one that sucked while the US got their big lead.

Tiger and Stricker played eight matches in all and scored 1/2 point. Unbelievable.

Cheers.

I dont mind losing to America, when you have gentlemen like Love and Mickelson in your team. The US fans can be obnoxious and unsporting. But the team plays with class.

Yep. Furyk took way too much time. He’s had bad luck all year, though.

But Furyk and Stricker were placed at the backend for a reason - it was supposed to be over by then. They were throw aways. It was the big boys up front who gagged, and left them with all the pressure.

Me too...especially Furyk....Have met him at a few events and he's always the last to leave the autograph seekers and goes out of his way to talk to kids....A Class act....but he just cant handle pressure well...

with the United States requiring only four points from the 12 on offer, ...
