SACRAMENTO — Gov. Jerry Brown signed a new law that will allow hundreds of thousands of young illegal immigrants to obtain driver's licenses and vetoed another that would have restricted sheriffs from helping federal authorities detain undocumented Californians for potential deportation.

His actions, announced Sunday as the deadline neared to finish work on nearly 1,000 bills sent to him by the Legislature this year, followed an intense week of protests, prayer vigils and lobbying by immigrant advocacy groups.

The governor also revived a tax break for Hollywood, allowed juvenile killers serving life in prison a chance for release and outlawed treatment intended to turn gay children straight. The laws take effect Jan. 1.

It’s good to see California politicians focused on their crushing fiscal problems. /s

The driver’s license part I agree with. Too many people on the road that don’t know the traffic rules.

How does this work? When I got my drivers license it required a Birth certificate, SS# and some sort of official mail addressed to me.

I supposes they can require a voter registration card and then have no requirements but a name and a signature for the voter registration card ... that’s the democratic party way.

While we’re at it, lets relax the requirement to have Auto Insurance because it’s too expensive.

Apparently no birth certificate is required. Having been born in a cardboard hut in Tijuana, some may not have one.

This thing is flawed in so many ways. That is but one.

I don’t think giving driver licences to illegal aliens will cause them to buy liability insurance.

It DOES give them a government-issued photo ID, so that will resolve any issues of ILLEGALS voting. Gag!

Jerry Brown is a certifiable idiot to sign the ridiculous legislation that is pumped out of that cesspool in Sacramento.

If there are any sane people in Western CA, they need to join with folks in Eastern CA and recall Gov. Brown!

Additionally, these illegal aliens should be deported instead of being given government-issued IDs.

I think that CA is soon going to be bankrupt, as more thinking people and businesses move elsewhere and the tax base disappears....while the colleges continue to promote liberal/communist/socialist doctrines.

I would agree that the state itself will face bankruptcy by 2020. You’ve got a growing trend of cities and counties facing the problem. The state can creep on by with a tax here and there...until the public demands a massive tax-cut. At that point, the game fails miserably.

Who will these colleges get money from if the tax base and wealthy alumni go elsewhere?

I wonder about state reciprocity in respecting driver’s licenses issued in CA. Is there some point at which you lower a standard so low that other states need not respect it?

Think about CC reciprocity. That’s a Constitutionally guaranteed right. Driving is not. I wonder if we could apply the DL logic to things like health insurance, etc. That kind of reciprocity would go a long way toward rebuilding federalism.

Drove from Las Vegas to Palmdale via I15 and some other highways recently. EVERY one of the rest stops were “Closed for Repairs”, yet all were new and nice looking and absolutely NO repair activity seen.

California is broke and they are encouraging more citizens who take rather than give. They are only looking for more and more Democrat votes which is curious because they tipped that scale quite a while back. It only makes sense if you start to believe that California’s controlling government is so addicted, so ‘culted’, so insane that they simply cannot help themselves.

They are the AA participant that comes to each meeting drunk and starting the process all over again each time.

CA made some radical moves last week:

Retirement funds for lower income people which employers apparently have to set up and workers have to actively opt-out of if they don't want it

Passage of law to make gay counseling for under 18 year olds illegal

Now this.

I'm wondering if Romney has a chance to pick more votes up here than previously thought.
