Ahead of the first debate, top journalists and commentators agree on one thing: Mitt Romney needs to shake up the race fast with an aggressive, confident performance on Wednesday night.
The reporters and pundits from across the political spectrum with whom POLITICO spoke leading up to the kick-off of the presidential debate season say theyre expecting Romney to come out strong against President Barack Obamas economic policies and his leadership style over the past four years. They say the Republican nominee needs to create a dramatic moment on the national stage but the medias expectation that Romney can pull that off is muted.

Operation demoralize week BEGINS?! Dude, it’s in full force already. Poll after poll published day after day in order to make us think the election is already over.
Maybe changing it to “There you lie again.” would work.
The cycle:
1. Polls show Romney struggling.
2. Pundits posit that Romney needs a big win in the first debate.
3. Romney does very well in the first debate.
4. Pundits tell us he did very poorly.
5. Media spreads the word that he did poorly.
6. Polls then tell us he did poorly in the debate, and is slipping in battleground states.
7. Repeat the cycle for the other debates.
Why Mitt Romney is So Unlikable?
A lot is being said in the media about Mitt Romney not being “likable” or that he
doesn’t “relate well” to people. Frankly, we struggled to understand why.
So after much research, we have come up with a Top Ten List to explain this “unlikablility.”
Top Ten Reasons To Dislike Mitt Romney:
1. Drop-dead, collar-ad handsome with gracious, statesmanlike aura.
Looks like every central casting’s #1 choice for Commander-in-Chief.
2. Been married to ONE woman his entire life, and has been faithful to her,
including through her bouts with breast cancer and MS.
3. No scandals or skeletons in his closet. (How boring is that?)
4. Can’t speak in a fake, southern, “black preacher voice” when necessary.
5. Highly intelligent. Graduated cum laude from both Harvard Law School and
Harvard Business School...and by the way, his academic records are NOT sealed.
6. Doesn’t smoke or drink alcohol, and has never done drugs, not even in the counter
-culture age when he went to college. Too square for today’s America?
7. Represents an America of “yesterday”, where people believed in God, went to Church,
didn’t screw around, worked hard, and became a SUCCESS!
8. Has a family of five great sons....and none of them have police records or are in drug rehab.
But of course, they were raised by a stay-at-home mom, and that “choice” deserves America’s scorn.
9. Oh yes...he’s a MORMON. We need to be very afraid of that very strange religion that
teaches its members to be clean-living, patriotic, fiscally conservative, charitable, self-reliant, and honest.
10. And one more point...pundits say because of his wealth, he can’t relate to ordinary Americans.
I guess that’s because he made that money HIMSELF...as opposed to marrying it or inheriting it from Dad.
Apparently, he didn’t understand that actually working at a job and earning your own money
made you unrelatable to Americans. My goodness, it’s a strange world, isn’t it?
OR, “Mr. President, how many different truths can you tell about the same subject before we can call it a lie?”
How about “Mr. President, I do have to admit that there was one statement you made four years ago that I find absolutely riveting. The statement that ‘if you don’t fix the economy in three years, it’s one-and-done’. I absolutely agree with that sentiment, as does Clint Eastwood.”
Technically, he graduated as a Baker Scholar from Harvard Business School.
I totally agree. The problem is we have been told how smart and what a great orator he is; but in fact, he is a blubbering moron with the stuttering and so on.
Exactly. All the debates will do is validate. Obama has already lost this. Repeating and relying on polls is a waste of words.
To win all Mitt needs is to show up.
Conservatives need to stop playing the Victim Card and start acting like winners! When we play the Liberals game by their rules —Conservatives lose. We need to change the rules.
Mitt needs to be more like Newt and attack the media.
I agree, I just meant it was the beginning of a new week in the same Operation.
As I understand this, it is an employee named Barack Hussein Obama who is up for review and he’s got some red marks in his work record.
Fire his lame ass.
Mitt got toughend up during the primary debates. He will do well. Look for him to be presidential and very knowledgeable.
Yep ... just another leg in there neverending ploy to control the election. They've been trying since the 70s (if not sooner) and have become bolder with each election. They won last time, they won't win this time.
