NZ: GM cows make 'low allergy' milk (genetically modified bovine w/o whey protein)
BBC News ^ | 10/2/12 | James Gallagher

A genetically modified cow that produces milk less likely to cause allergic reactions has been engineered by New Zealand scientists.

Up to 3% of infants are allergic to cows' milk in their first year of life.

The modified cow produced milk without beta-lactoglobulin - a whey protein to which some people are allergic.

The study has been labelled a "milestone" by one scientist, but some campaign groups say it raises ethical concerns.

There are important differences between a woman's breast milk and cows' milk, such as beta-lactoglobulin, which is found in milk from cows but not people.

The researchers, at AgResearch and the University Waikato in New Zealand, said: "It is not surprising that is constitutes a major milk allergen."

Eureka perhaps .. for those who love milk and those who are allergic too.

Dr. MooReau’s Milk,, We deliver ..

No tail?

wow.

Analysis David Shukman Science editor, BBC News

Silencing the gene responsible for the allergenic protein Betalactoglobulin (BLG) is a clever approach to making cow’s milk more palatable. But several difficult challenges stand between this achievement and a product that parents might feed to their infants.

The mystery of Daisy’s missing tail is just one of those. It won’t affect the milk obviously but it’s the kind of flaw that may leave many people feeling uneasy - and anti-GM campaigners will highlight it.

Then the New Zealand scientists must try to breed from Daisy. Only by creating a herd will there be any chance of making this advance commercially viable. If - and there’s no guarantee - she does produce offspring, all eyes will be on their milk to see if it too lacks BLG like that of her mother’s.

The final test is public acceptance, easier in some countries than others, researchers once again questioning people’s appetite for the fruits of novel science.

Wait a minute, I thought milk was milk and our bodies couldn’t tell the difference between natural foods and GM foods. /s

A reminder from the beginning...

Genesis 11:6 And the Lord said, “Indeed the people are one and they all have one language, and this is what they begin to do; now nothing that they propose to do will be withheld from them.

There is nothing NEW under the sun. As it was then, as it is now.

Those that are ignorant and do not fear the word of the living God are going against His laws and modifying the DNA that God ordained for each species... so the question is...how long until they modify the DNA of humans. As the account in Genesis goes... he scattered them. He will do it again... the Bible says... this time by fire.

“But the so-called hypoallergenic milk eliminates one allergen only to increase another, researchers not involved with the study say
. . .
Dr. Scott Sicherer, a professor and researcher at the Jaffe Food Allergy Institute at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, said BLG is just one of the proteins in bovine milk that cause allergies in humans. Many humans are allergic to multiple milk proteins, especially casein.
. . .
According to Sicherer, 13 to 76 percent of patients react to BLG, compared with 92 percent to 100 percent of patients who react to caseins.”

I was watching a documentary Yesterday. It had to do with Oil and alternative energy and the environment and such. The basic message of the doc was Oil Bad and its killing our planet blah blah blah. Yet in the same Doc they were singing the praises of genomoding algae to make oil as the savior of the planet.

I've read a bit on genomoding and I tell you it scares me way more than oil and the internal combustion engine.

I am all for scientific advancement but we are talking modifying living organisms that can breed and replicate.

A bad mutation of some form of algae could devastate our entire planet far faster than any industrial age invention.

I hope to God these enviroweenies don't kill us all trying to save us from our SUVs

This is rather depressing and disturbing. When we lived in NZ their dairy products were outstanding. A few years back we found Whole Foods carried their butter. My daughter and I literally put it on a plate and ate some of it straight. I saw a Paula Dean show where there was a butter challenge. NZ butter was the only one she couldn’t name, but she thought it was really great. We used to buy cream by the litre, and their cheese...! Then the outstanding beef but I digress. We’d watch our neighbors calves playing. My husband and I would give each other a knowing look and say, “happy cows....” Sadly, Whole Foods doesn’t sell their butter anymore. We used to buy it by the case from them. Happily, Trader Joe’s carries one of their cheddar cheeses. I’d hate to think of anything changing with their dairy products. Just before we left, there was a big research trial with goat’s milk going on. It’s supposedly closest to breast milk. I guess that’s not as exciting as playing God.

"....what is the use of milk without protein.."

The milk is without ONE SPECIFIC protein. There are other proteins which will still be there.
