8-Year-Old’s Letter to Romney Urges Him to Not Fire Big Bird
Yahoo ^ | 10/5/12 | Melissa Knowles

Romney had said, "I'm gonna stop the subsidy to PBS ... I like PBS, I love Big Bird ... but I am not going to keep spending money on things to borrow money from China to pay for." Cecelia and others were upset about potentially losing the long-running "Sesame Street" and other PBS shows. Cecelia's handwritten letter reads as follows:

"I saw you on the debate last night and you said you would cut off PBS kids with Sesame Street on it. It was my favorite show on Earth. But now I'm 8 years old. When I grow up, I'm going to get married and I want my kids to watch it. So do not cut it off. You find something else to cut off! Don't hurt little kids. They need Sesame Street where they can learn from it. Save Big Bird and his friends."

Reaction to the letter has been mixed. One skeptical commenter wrote, "If anyone thinks kids really write these letters, then I have a bridge to sell you." Another agreed with the letter, writing, "please Mitt ... just leave this one alone."

The letter was sent to Romney campaign headquarters by Cecelia's mom and also to the Huffington Post. No word yet from the Romney campaign on Cecelia's letter, and lucky for Romney, the legal voting age in the United States is 18.

If everyone loves Sesame Street so much, it should have no problem surviving on its own in the competitive marketplace just like every other successful show.

Bump that. Sesame Street should, at this point, be able to sustain itself through the royalties for the toys and educational materials it encourages and generates.

Anyone who demands tax dollars for PBS and never gives “their fair share” for the programming they watch is a hypocrite.

Big Bird won’t be fired, he’ll just be funded by those that love him most. Capitalism is a beautiful thing if allowed to exist.

Thank you for saying what I have been thinking the last couple of days. The BEST parts of PBS would survive. In fact, ALL of PBS would probably survive, they would just change into something of a "real" network. They already get corporate and other sponsorship, they even show advertisements. This would simply increase to 100%. I bet PBS would do even BETTER once off the government teet. Heck, don't the Koch brothers finance half the derned thing already...?

fools ALLL the sesame street characters are SELF SUPPORTING

They recieve royalties and fees for being aired and sold ACROSS THE WORLD.

PBS does not need money for sesame street.

If anything BIG BIRD SHOULD OPEN THAT SESAME STREET BANK ACCOUNT and fund PBS on his own.

The children’s television workshop needs a b***tch slap.

Exactly. He’s probably been mommy coddled and just ended breast feeding a couple of years ago.

Dear Cecelia and your Parents who stage-managed your letter,

The United States is broke. Your share of the national debt is $200,000 and rising, and you and your children will have to pay it.

Big Bird makes $400,000,000 a year. Do you think the taxpayers should have to pay PBS to stay on the air when it has many sponsors and foundations?

A Broke Taxpayer

Big Bird and company made several billion dollars getting subsidized by us.

Maybe we can get some of that money back.

Hilarious. Lil Cecelia’s politically savvy mom had the presence of mind to send her letter to leftie Huff-Po but not to send her 8 y/o kid to bed before 10:30pm on a school night?

Let Cecelia and her friends watch 40 years of “Sesame Street” reruns. Why, PBS could put them on DVD and sell them or give them away for a whopping donation!

Problem solved, have another drink ...

I can see the “news” media playing this one up big time, but they’ll ignore the fact that the Wookie’s school food program exempts her kids. Just the media doing their “job”, protecting the US move to full socialism/communism/dictatorship.

Big Bird is part of the 1% - he’s a freaking billionaire, but still takes money from the pay checks of dock workers, teenagers trying to save for the prom and working seniors, every week.

Good Lord people are STUPID..Romney NEVER said he would fire Big Bird, he said he “Loves” Big Bird..just wants to cut funding to PBS if they get dollars from China. By the way the President of PBS makes over 600 grand a year, I think he can afford to buy Big Bird some birdseed

“”””Hilarious. Lil Cecelia’s politically savvy mom had the presence of mind to send her letter to leftie Huff-Po but not to send her 8 y/o kid to bed before 10:30pm on a school night?”””

An 8 year-old wrote this clap trap? I challenge that. More likely the mother - who uses Big Bird as a baby sitter while she blogs on HUFFPO and DU. The wording is a dead giveaway.
