The 27-year-old coffee barista died in April after being struck by an NYPD squad car that began chasing him as he swiped paver stones in the predawn light at his Brooklyn housing project.

Now his mom’s being chased anew, hounded by a collection agency hired by the city with a cruel final demand, the Daily News has learned.

The city has ordered her to pay the $710 cost of repairing the police car that killed her boy.

If I caught him stealing from me I’d want $1.50 for every round I put in his ass. Them Hornady 300gr 45 Colt rounds are not cheap!

After our 18 year old son was broadsided and killed by a Mexican yardman, we got a letter from his attorney saying he wanted us to buy him another car because his was totaled. How's that for a lot of nerve!

You and me both, he was 27?? How are his parents responsible for the dent in the cop car? The ‘kid’ was an adult to us, he’s only a ‘kid’ to a liberal reporter, and apparently collection agencies.

I don’t think many here have sympathy for the thief whose illegal actions resulted in his own death. The issue here is should parents be responsible for damages caused of their adult son.

I’m sorry for the death of your son, that must have been an incredibly hard thing to deal with. Asking you to pay for the man’s car was as wrong as the story is tragic. May I assume you told them get lost?

Hmm. A collection agency not the cops. I had a friend who died whose widow got letters demanding child support after SS survivors benefits were being paid his child’s mother.

The collection agency was apparently hired by the city.

New York City officials have apologized for sending a collection letter to a man who was killed by a police cruiser

A post in there explains that the demand letter is a form letter, and that the demand was withdrawn after a human looked at the circumstances leading to the damage.

Yes, we told our attorney to tell him that our son was still dead and to go f... himself. He probably left off my last comment.

The mother is probably the executor of his estate, whatever estate a 27 year old barista who lives in a project may have. The police are almost certainly making a claim against any assets he may have had through her as executor of the estate — the same as any creditor would.

For what it’s worth........

City Tried to Bill Dead Man for Damage to Police Car That Struck and Killed Him

Late last month, Laverne Dobbinson received a letter, addressed to her son, from a law firm notifying him that it had been retained by the City of New York to collect money for damages to a police car. ..........

On Friday, the law firm handling the collection effort said it had formally dropped the effort. Paul J. Browne, a spokesman for the Police Department, said his agency did not send out the letter and referred the matter to the city’s Law Department.

“We don’t know any instance where we send letters like that,” he said. “I’m not sure how it came out.”

Kate Ahlers, a spokeswoman for the Law Department, said the notice had been sent in error after her department received a referral from a unit of the Police Department. “We regret that Mr. Robinson’s family received a collection notice,” she said in a statement, adding, “We recognize that this involves a tragic case.”

All the family had to do is write a letter to the effect. The person who caused the damage is dead and we’re not responsible for his debts. Don’t contact us ever again about this matter. “A cease-and-desist letter is a letter demanding that the recipient refrain from a certain behavior or face legal action.”

FWIW from another NYT article:

“In 2009, he was arrested four times for stealing various types of cobblestones, including one arrest at the World Trade Center site at 4 a.m., which netted him a 15-day jail sentence, according to the authorities. “

It also says he had about $2000 worth of them in his vehicle at the time of incident..

I have no pity for thieves either but his Ma was not one (that we know of) nor was she charged with this crime so why does she have to pay?

Is this even legal?

"...as he swiped paver stones in the predawn light at his Brooklyn housing project.

Those stupid stones would have gotten the idiopt what- a buck each?

But the original cost plus labor TIMES TWO to do it over again will be 100 times that cost

I have no pity for anything that happens to thieves, petty or not.

In arab contries he would lose a hand
