HOLLYWOOD, October 5, 2012, (LifeSiteNews.com) – Never before have there been so many homosexual characters portrayed on broadcast and cable television, according to the latest report from the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD).
The 17th annual Where We Are On TV report found that LGBT characters account for 4.4 percent of scripted series regulars in the 2012-2013 broadcast television schedule. This is up from 2.9 percent in 2011, 3.9 percent in 2010, 3 percent in 2009, 2.6 percent in 2008 and 1.1 percent in 2007.
GLAAD’s study reviewed 97 scripted television programs scheduled to air this upcoming season on broadcast networks, and counted a total of 701 series regular characters. Thirty-one of those are lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT), as are an additional 19 recurring characters.
ABC has the highest amount with 5.2 percent (10 out of 194) of their regular characters identifying as LGBT. After leading last year, Fox is in second with six LGBT characters out of 118 total series regulars (5.1 percent). However, Fox’s Glee is the broadcast television show with the most number of regular and recurring homosexual characters, with six.

GLAAD also said that CBS “improved” and will feature four LGBT characters out of 142 series regulars (2.8 percent), up from 0.7 percent last year. The increase came after GLAAD lambasted the network in a 2010 report, prompting CBS President Nina Tassler to apologize and pledge to “do better.”
On mainstream cable networks, the number of announced LGBT series regular characters has also increased to 35, and will also feature 26 recurring characters for a total of 61 LGBT characters.
This year Showtime features the greatest number of LGBT characters on cable with 12, seven of which are series regulars. Once again this year True Blood is the show on cable television with the most number of LGBT characters, with six of them.
“It is vital for networks to weave complex and diverse storylines of LGBT people in the different programs they air,” said GLAAD President Herndon Graddick. “When young LGBT people see loving couples like Callie and Arizona on Grey’s Anatomy or Degrassi‘s confident transgender high school student Adam Torres, they find characters they can look up to and slowly start building the courage to live authentically.”
Two to three times their actual portion of the population; they're already over-represented.
Here in NJ we got a look at “gay life” up close with our gay governor McGreevey; he was a freak who compromised his position trying to give a homeland-security-type position to his “companion” (a foreign national), had a family as a political prop (according to his ex-wife), and resigned in disgrace.
One notices that they did not count the gay characters on reality television, such as about 90% of the entire Bravo, E!, and Style Network lineups, anything on home decoration, cooking, and countless other shows, both cable and network.
But really, could you have a show about musical theater and have it be otherwise?

One of the few channels I watched was Food Network because I really liked Alton Brown. The network became so flaming gay I gave it up about 4 years ago. When it got down to occasionally watching a movie, mostly on the Military channel, and Wednesday night “Miller Time” on Bill O’Reilly, I got rid of cable.
Thankfully, my teenage daughter can’t stomach network tv and yelled at me once when I was channel surfing and got distracted because she thought the show was disgusting (Big Bang Theory.)
And this is the reason that I refuse to watch a LOT of the dreck on TV. Glee has become such a Hollyweird agenda program that, in spite of the great music they do, I simply won't watch.
TV has hit rock bottom in the quality of its programming and has started to dig.
As a result, I would rather watch old TV shows, old movies, or just read a book. I can (and have) live without TV and, given its current state of dreck, prefer to leave it turned off.
I wish they would just put them all on one channel we could then block.
That’s interesting. So the % of homosexual characters/actors/people on TV is probably much higher taking all those other kinds of shows into the mix.
I’ve only had a TV for two years since I left home as a teenager; that was during the Klinton hearings, oddly enough, so I got to watch those.
The crap that network/cable feeds to the unwashed masses is so despicable that four years ago (when my boy went off to college) I did not hesitate to cancel my subscription to cable, and to give my hi-res flatscreens to neighbors.
I haven’t ever regretted it, but now I am thinking it might be worth the cost to see Øbamatollah’s concession speech...
Is there someplace where one can find what shows have “gayness” in it?
I don’t have TV reception or cable but I do tend to buy DVDs of shows or series. I was shocked when I bought “Six feet under”. Don’t want to make that mistake again. I was hesitant about True Blood, now I know better.
I do try to read the reviews and comments but it is not always clear,,, it is not mentioned.
I am sure that is the case, from reading; since I never watch TV my knowledge is all from what I read on FR!
But I am 100% sure that ALL religious believers (other than Mozlems of course probably) especially Christians and probably religiously observant Jews are portrayed as hateful, mentally ill and harmful to themselves and others.
Actually come to think of it, I rented a room from a friend for a while when “Touched by An Angel” was on. I liked that show. Della Reese was wonderful. IIRC that was started by a Christian network - does the network still exist?
BTW those photographs you sent me were incredible! I made hub sit down and look at them with me.
Viewing them was like a nice little vacation.
