CAIRO — The elections that followed the Arab uprisings elevated Islamists out of decades of repression and into the region’s most powerful posts. Here in Egypt, a former prisoner became president.
But to Salafists, adherents of a puritanical form of Islam who have embraced the country’s new freedoms with gusto, the emerging Islamist order has a serious flaw: It isn’t nearly Islamist enough.
“They say that the people do not want sharia,” said Gamel Saber, a back-slapping Salafist activist who said he dreams of a day when his country’s courts will fully implement Islamic law. “But that is not true. They are ready.”
Saber’s dream is shared by millions of allies across North Africa, and that reality is proving to be the most serious challenge yet for the months-old governments struggling to find their feet in Egypt, Libya and Tunisia.
As moderate Islamist leaders in all three countries begin to craft post-revolutionary constitutions, the Salafists in their midst are pushing — sometimes at the ballot box, sometimes at the point of a gun — to create societies that more closely mirror their ultraconservative religious beliefs and lifestyles.
The formidability of the Salafist awakening and the problems it poses for the new governments are unexpected. While challenges from remnants of the old regimes and from disgruntled liberals were widely anticipated, the Islamist bona fides of those who took power had been considered beyond reproach. All have vowed to restore Islam to its rightful place at the center of society after decades of marginalization.
But many Salafists, emboldened by what they see as growing public enthusiasm for their cause, have denounced the new leaders for being too timid in injecting Islamic thought into long-standing domestic and foreign policies. The time for more dramatic action, they say, is now. . .

So what exactly are these liberals trying to say? Bad stuff is on the horizon and it is the ultraconservatives fault? This is the phrasing used by liberals against the 'TeaParty and other law abiding conservatives' day in and day out.

That’s the first thing I noticed—”ultra-conservatives”—they are up to some kind of language logistics. These are radical muslim Islamists. Not conservatives, not extremists, but terrorists. I love the way these Marxist, Alinsky-types can turn things upside-down, confuse people, and then blame it on us!
I am not familiar with the Salafists, so I did a wee bit of searching. I find it most strange that Obama and crew surely had to know the who and what when they funded in part the Egyptian revolution. So why now is the WashingtonPost presenting as if talking points specifically naming the Salafists. There is a reason why, and when they label them ‘ultraconservatives’ it is not a positive compliment. And when one media outlet starts a liberal chant the rest soon follow and not long this administration uses the same phrases to excuse themselves as if they had no clue about what to expect.
I just wish I knew what the WashingtonPost is saying in their coded phrases.

Like the Iranian Revolution these countries are replacing autocracy with theocracy. Iran today is as corrupt and maybe more brutal as it ever was under the Shah and so soon will be Egypt, Tunisia, Syria and the others.
Islam is about 1,400 years old. If you look at what Christians were doing at that point in their time Joan of Arc was being burned alive.

It all depends on what one is trying to conserve.

What can you expect from the Washington Post? Moderate Islamists are a non-entity. “Puritannical” beliefs are another abuse of Chrisitianity. If only Salafists were Puritans, then they’d be at peace.
Puritans weren’t religious nuts. This is a lie the authors were taught by some anti-Western Marxist professor. It simply doesn’t hold up to historical fact.

Abigail Hauslohner, M.A. '09, covers Egypt & Gaza for TIME -- Hauslohner covered Iraq for TIME before coming to the J-School
Abigail Hauslohner, M.A. '09, a freelance reporter and producer living in Cairo, had a six-page spread in the Nov. 2 issue of TIME and an accompanying video on Time.com on the tunnel economy of the Gaza Strip. This is her first piece in the magazine since completing the M.A. Politics program.
For the project, Hauslohner, who has previously reported for TIME in Iraq, descended 30 feet into the underground highway system, which proliferated in 2007 when the territory's borders were closed once Hamas took control.
"Welcome to the highways of the economy of the Palestinians of Gaza," Hauslohner wrote. "On the outside, on the 3-mile (5 km) fringe of Rafah town, are sandy hills dotted with tents, tarps and bulldozers. Underneath lies what passes for commerce, the surreptitious journey of goods that help keep the territory running."
Hauslohner, who is fluent in Arabic and holds a B.A. in Arabic Studies from the University of Michigan, moved to Cairo in June, but also lived there two years ago as a Fulbright Scholar and a stringer for Reuters.
"So Cairo sort of feels like home," she said. "Reporting, however, can be trying at times. Egypt is an incredibly corrupt and abusive police state, governed by an authoritarian regime. And while my foreign passport allows me to enjoy a certain level of immunity that local journalists don't have, access is always a problem... Last month, I had to seek special permission from Egyptian Intelligence to enter the Gaza Strip. It took two days of persistent phone calls to the Foreign Ministry and a lot of pleading, while I waited on the border, before I was allowed to cross." [November 2, 2009]
By treating salafists as if they are the sole radicals they are implying the Muslim Brotherhood, Hamas, etc, are the opposite, and non-threatening. But they are all a threat because they are radical and terroristic and do not tolerate free and open debate.
I appreciate the explanation. I see the mass confusion and deception planted by liberals. What I do not see is their purpose, as our liberals, the media and Hollywood would be first in line to be quieted if this madness fully goes global. Surely our liberals are not so deaf, dumb, and blind to write and fund their own demise?
Yes, they are. Apparently their hatred of America, God and Judaeo-Christian morality short-circuits their intellectual processing. Their thinking is more like that of destructive children than responsible adults.
I know you are correct, but, it is difficult to actually live the days observing them in action, rather than reading repeated historical accounts of the same mentality.
