TIME TO TAKE GRAMA'S KEYS (CONGRESSWOMAN LOUISE SLAUGHTER)
Lonsberry.com ^ | Oct. 8, 2012 | Bob Lonsberry

We all love Grama.

But it’s time to take away the keys.

It’s not about how many years she’s been driving. It’s not about all the great things she’s done. It’s not about how much you appreciate and respect her.

It’s not about yesterday, it’s about today.

It’s about common sense and realizing that this can’t go on. She can’t do today what she did yesterday, and the passage of time has done what the passage of time does.

She won’t want to give them up. She will be certain that she’s still capable. She might even fight you over it. And it might lead to some temporary hard feelings.

But it’s the right thing to do.

It’s time to take away Grama’s keys.

For most middle-aged people across Monroe County, Louise Slaughter has been in Congress all of their adult lives. There are grandparents today who were newlyweds when she was first elected. There are local men who have been born, grown, fought in war and died, all since Louise Slaughter went to Washington. For a generation, this region’s voice and face in Washington have been Louise Slaughter.

Different people will see the effectiveness of those years differently. Those who view insider status and being a spokesperson for partisan cause as important will note success. Those who think legislative accomplishment and local benefit are important will find less success.

She has been a champion of America’s liberal and feminist causes, and earned praise or criticism as a result.

She has had a long and interesting career.

83 is old, but corrine brown, my rep, behaves as if oxygen supply is cut off for a reasonable thought.

Being old and thinking/acting old are two different things. Your sister is living her life, not sitting knitting all the time and giving up. Good for her.

She is in better health than her boyfriend....He’s a nice guy, a legal Tex Mex...plays drums in a band, sells stuff at flea markets....yep, they haven’t slowed down...sister also had bi-lateral hip replacements. Kept her down for a couple of months in healing of the second hip replacement, breezed through the 1st one...

I was born and raised in Rochester, but haven’t lived there since 1972. I spent the summer of 2011 there because my sister was in hospice care, and it was then that I first discovered Bob Lonsberry’s radio show. I was delighted to find out that his program is replayed on a Syracuse station in the afternoon, so when I’m out and about, I get to listen to him. He’s excellent.

There are a lot of good representatives and senators though who haved served more than two terms:

Paul Ryan, Michele Bachmann, Jeff Sessions, Jim DeMint, John Barasso, Joe Wilson, Mike Pence, and Marsh Blackburn, to name a few.

We’d lose those stalwarts. And non-elected staffers would have far more power than they do today.

Representatives (because they have such short terms) could probably have more - it would have to be four (eight years) in order to keep the staggered effect.

But then they should simply go on to something else. Run for governor, for Senator, or just go back to whatever they did before becoming politicians.

For a relatively young woman (she is 46), she dresses like a dowdy old lday.
