Bellefonte, Pennsylvania (CNN) -- Former Penn State football coach Jerry Sandusky will likely spend the rest of his life in prison, after a judge handed down a prison sentence Tuesday for his convictions on child sexual abuse charges.

Judge John Cleland said Sandusky will face no less than 30 years and no more than 60 years, with credit for time served.

He was convicted in June of sexually abusing 10 boys over a 15-year period.

The 68-year-old had faced a maximum of 400 years in prison.

“I hope the victims sue Sandusky and Penn State into bankruptcy.”

That’s a great idea. Have any of them tried to sue them yet?

When are the sodomites going to protest?

Really, I can’t believe they haven’t.

Believe it or not, there's a sodomite child molester's lobby called the National Man-Boy Love Association (NAMBLA) that often shows up at "gay pride" parades and other such events. Maybe they'll raise a ruckus on his behalf.

Bring back the stockade in the public square.

In England up till the end of eh eighteenth century, one of the crimes for which one could be sent to the pillory, a wooden device that held the head and hands, was sodomy. The sentence was usually for only one or two hours in the device, but it could be a virtual death sentence, as eighteenth-century London wasn't twenty-first century San Francisco, and sodomites weren't all that popular.

I remind you that suing Penn State is effectively suing the taxpayers of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, who are, by and large, blameless in this matter — save those who should be charged with crimes in the cover-up and sued as private persons and just happen incidentally to pay taxes in Pennsylvania.

You propose executing people for suffering under a morbid temptation?

A pedophile is someone who suffers from the paraphilia (the psychological term) or besetting temptation (the moral term) of sexually desiring prepubescent children. Some know it is wrong and struggle mightily and in some cases successfully against the temptation. Some, like Sandusky, give in.

I trust you really mean pedophiles who act on their paraphilia and abuse children should be executed.

Except that isn't what Sandusky is. He's a typical boy-raping faggot (the untempered term) aka: a pederast (the psychological term)

Not really.

Penn State has an endowment of $1.83 billion
They can afford to take responsibility on their own.
The state and the taxpayers should cut them off anyway.
The university, not the taxpayer, should pay the price for the criminal activity of their staff and faculty.

If it weakens or damages the university that would be part of the price they pay for allowing this filthy abuse to take place.

Let's not forget the lives that have been destroyed and scarificed in favor of the college's reputation and football program.

Endowment reaches all-time high of $1.83 billion

By “pedophiles should be executed” I mean anyone who has ever molested a child.

As far as child pornography is concerned, IMHO all those who manufacture, distribute, and view child pornography should also be executed. If that sounds harsh, those who watch it are participating after the fact in the rape of children. And although I have no statistics, I suspect that most of those who view child pornography also actively molest children, sooner or later.

Pedophilia needs to be elminated, and the only way to eliminate it is to eliminate those who practice it. And as far as promoting it, like the NAMBLA organization, such promotion is NOT protected by the Bill of Rights and all such organizations or promotions should be illegal. Anyone who has ever promoted pedophilia should have their life under a microscope and if they have ever molested a child or manufactured, distributed or owned child pornography, they should be executed.

I hope my POV is clear.

Just because someone is attracted to molesting children is not cause to execute them. But they should know that if they try to act out their morbid desire, they will be executed. And none of this 20-30 years on death row, either.

I’m not defending anyone. Just demanding moral clarity. The definition of “pedophile” is based on a desire, which I characterized as a morbid temptation (hardly a phrase one would use in defense of the desire).

Those who yield to temptations to engage in actions which harm others should be punished (and very harshly in the case of sexual predators who prey upon children), but for the actions, not for the temptation. Those who resist temptation, whether of a morbid and unusual sort like pedophilia, or of more ordinary sorts, ought not be condemned for being subject to temptation, but aided in resisting temptation — in traditional Christian societies those struggling against pedophilia might be urged to retreat to a monastery where they would have no contact with children. Perhaps pedophiles requesting to be castrated to drive off the temptation before they harm children should have their requests honored, rather than turned aside.

Leave thoughtcrime to the left. Even as applied to thoughts which are loathsome to us.

Well, good. (I wouldn’t want to think any FReepers were proposing execution for thoughtcrimes.)

Personally, I am enamored of the East Roman approach to heinous crimes, which eschewed execution in favor of mutilation to give the criminal a chance to live a life of repentance for his sins while posing no threat to society. (Blinding was favored, though for molesting children, perhaps blinding, castration and loss of the dominant hand might be appropriate — yes, I’m afraid the Muslims stole the idea of mutilation as punishment from us Orthodox Christians back in the day — of course, they ruined the intent by adding execution back into the mix for apostacy, adultery, . . . )

Perhaps I’m old fashioned, but evil is evil. I don’t buy into blaming imaginary psychiatric illnesses, phony baloney “anti-Muslim” videos, bad childhoods, or anything else for the actions of an individual, But we’re in complete and total agreement.

I sincerely hope I misunderstood The_Reader_David’s comment. However, to me, and again, I could be wrong, it sounded like he was trying to evoke pity on those wish to prey on children but don’t. I have no pity for them at all.

But this is the problem I have with your argument: You’re taking the evil out of the equation. The mere desire to sexually assault an innocent child is an unspeakable evil. It’s not mere a temptation, it’s a desire to commit a heinous act.

I’m not a psychiatrist, but if a patient reports such a desire, at very least, they should have to register with local police and the entire community should be put on red alert, if not committed for life.

Indeed, evil is evil, and each of us is responsible for our own actions. But I have a feeling a lot more of us will end up with the goats on the left-hand of Christ on the Last Day by yielding to my own besetting temptations to sloth, wrath, self-esteem, pride, and ordinary heterosexual lust (directed toward sexually mature women) — the last now blunted a bit by age — and failing to repent and lay hold of grace in Christ, than will end up there by yielding to more exotic and loathsome sexual temptations.

I do not think I am discounting evil. Besetting temptations are most often of demonic origin, and are indeed evil. The Orthodox Fathers have a careful understanding of the process of temptation — verified by centuries of experience — set down in numerous writings on spiritual warfare.

The evil thought, no matter how insistent or how grave the sin to which it tempts, is not itself a sin. (If it were, the demons could cause us to sin without the participation of our will.) It must be driven away — not even argued with, that is too much like entertaining it. When evil thoughts recur they must be fought with prayer and, in hard cases, fasting. (In the case in point, making oneself ‘a eunuch for the sake of the Kingdom of God’ might even be in order to drive off the evil thought.) The moment one entertains the evil thought, really considers it at all, or worse, takes pleasure in it, it becomes a sin, and is a matter for confession, even if one does not act on it. When one plans to act on it, it becomes a more grievous sin, even if, by God’s grace one is prevented from carrying out one’s plan.

I would be careful with the stern condemnation of temptation, yes, even of temptation to commit heinous evils. The demons are wily and cruel — thus St. Paul’s warning about guarding oneself lest, one also be tempted — the demons delight in nothing so much as the fall of the virtuous. Indeed, evil is evil, as you say. Would you have the same absolutism you apply to temptation, to considering, to desiring to molest children be applied to the temptation, considering or desiring to commit lesser evils? Have you really been preserved from all temptation (something even Our Lord was not)? No man, liveth and sinneth not, and [He] only is beyond sin. Be careful: The judgement with which you judge is the judgement with which you will be judged.

I realize we came to this through your agreeing with little jeremiah’s policy prescription for how the state, ‘which bears not the sword in vain’ should deal with the evil of child molesting pedophiles, and this may all now seem far afield, but your continued sternness made me spiritually uneasy. (little jeremiah allowed that he only wanted execution for actions.) One can fall off the royal road on the right side as well as the left, as we say in the Christian East, and I think the conversation finally worked around to what my deep point really was.

Very interesting discussion.

Thank you both for your thoughtful comments.

The phrase “entertaining thoughts” is very apt - thoughts of evil can be “entertained” - like a guest - “Come in, have a seat. Let’s talk; oh, would you like some refreshment? Stick around - and make sure you come back tomorrow!”

Or they can be driven out - shouted out, even! Or just ignored, as one does with an unwelcome guest who won’t leave, you turn your back, refuse to listen or look, engage with other welcome guests or activities, and so on.

If a person has such a base temptation as to desire to molest children, I suppose it might be possible to overcome this and never act on it. Some other temptations are not so evil; for instance the desire of a man for a woman or vice versa; as this desire can be made good by marrying a suitable mate, whereas the desire to molest a child has no proper outlet.

Or, for instance, gluttony. Gluttony is over eating habitually, without restraint. But everyone needs to eat food, so eating food can be sinful or virtuous or in line with religious purpose (to keep the body healthy, and in differing religions there are different prescriptions for food intake.)

So while everyone is tempted to sin, not everyone is equally tempted to the same depth or vileness of sin. In the current state of depravity in our culture, it is very difficult for many people not to be tempted to extremely depraved sins, due to so much exposure when young to cesspit media, “entertainment”, and school filth propaganda. This is very tragic, since children have no voice or choice in what they are fed. Unfortunately, this lack of choice as a young person does not excuse them when they act as adults.

The only real solution is for more and more individuals to live as their religion dictates, sincerely and with humility. And for the government to again be founded on basic morality (and justice) as common to all religions. I don’t know how this will be achieved, but I hope it will.

The proposal of mutilation is IMHO potentially valid, but in our current social climate such people would merely be recipients of social services and further be a drain on overburdened taxpayers. And castration, I have read, does not necessarily stop child molesters, as the real problem is not their organ, but their minds.
