Pols, cops clueless as protesters run wild in downtown Oakland (no one arrested, $12K damage)

OAKLAND -- A protest at City Hall that surprised both the Police Department and top city officials caused more than $12,000 in damage to public buildings and thousands more to private businesses, city officials said Monday.

A day after about 200 protesters roamed downtown streets with no consequences, smashing windows of businesses and city offices, city officials were still trying to explain why no one was arrested and why police were unprepared.

The protest was billed on Facebook as an anti-imperialist rally and march, timed to coincide with the 11th anniversary of the start of the U.S. war in Afghanistan.

But the Police Department had no idea the march was going to occur, and by the time officials realized a large gathering was forming and vandalism had begun, it was too late to call in off-duty officers for extra support, said police spokeswoman Johnna Watson.

"We did not have any information that we had 200 to 300 protesters on their way here," Watson said. "The march presented itself, and in that march, they went very quickly doing their vandalism.

"That is very difficult from a law enforcement perspective," Watson continued.

...

About an hour later, protesters had left a swath of vandalism in their wake as they broke glass front doors and windows at two city offices and about nine private businesses, including the Oakland Tribune.

Two windows were broken at the newspaper's office. Protesters also targeted three bank branches, the offices of Kaiser Permanente, AC Transit, Fox Theater, Sears and the Oakland Scientific Facility, which houses computers and data storage for Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory. Banks were closed for Columbus Day on Monday.

Protesters also slashed tires and broke windows on a couple of cars.

“Story is bogus or not telling the whole thing.”

Bingo. That’s what I missed. Great point!

Must admit The Athletics have played very well this year, but I agree Detroit looks hard to beat.

Perhaps a lot of cops had the day off yesterday to be ready for the next three (if needed) nights.

....and Angels' fan.

Detroit was predicted to run out front and stay there but struggled through most of the season and fell to 3rd place for a while. They had a 45 game stretch where they never won more than 2 games in a row.

What they really have going for them is the fact that they play well under pressure.

I call BS on the cops were caught unprepared story. This comes from the top down. Barry Hussein-Gov. Brown-Oakland mayor,Etc. Can't have civilians clashing with cops in the streets this close to the election. Better to make a non-story out of it. The media puppets are more than glad to assist Dear Leader!

Aside from shooting them ALL, I think the next best thing is follow them home...and retaliate in kind.

Typically, their parents will be wealthy and Democrat, which explains the reluctance to bust their heads. As an example, take a look at William Ayers dad

The city administration obviously told the police to leave them alone, because the officials are in complete agreement with the goals of the leftist anarchists.

I took The Tigers to win the World Series about a month ago.

Time will tell.

I'd rather see Ichiro get a ring.

Well, reading this, I am led to believe that the next time you ‘plan’ a bank holdup, or even the bodega on the corner, one must inform the police if the citizenry expects the police department to respond.

OH I FORGOT. California being an OPEN CARRY state and all they should be able to let the citizens take care of their own problems and lay off the cops that just want to ‘ride around’ and worry about coffee breaks.

I realize it is NOT the best comparison etc, but WE must remember that Kent State brought an end to the storming of College Admin Buildings etc .

Once these idiots learn that “WE THE PEOPLE” have no problem making them statistics they will stop making these bad decisions.

Of course, the courts AND JURIES etc, find no problem with giving large awards to ‘students’ that get pepper sprayed AFTER being warned to leave the area, so in some respect, it gives the idiots ‘license’ to do what they want with seemingly no consequences - except getting the rest of us to give them cash awards.
