My 5 cents: Thoughts from a Russian immigrant

These past 20 years in the United States proved that the fairy tale land I've heard about is still the land of opportunity. This is the country where everyone has a chance for a good living, if they work at it. In the country I came from we worked hard, but to no avail. The system did not reward the hard work, it favored those who sought well-being by becoming a part of the system, manipulating the system, or becoming Communist Party members.

When I came to the United States in 1991 I couldn't wait to get my "green card" to be able to start working. Neither my lacking English nor my inability to drive could stop me from getting a job. I walked! With my master's degree I was proud to get my first job in America at McDonald's. But this letter is not about me, it is about my concerns about the direction this country is heading.

-snip

If we continue the route set about four years ago, the life I briefly described above will be a reality in America. It won't happen very fast and won't be in such a severe form. The government in Russia had control over all industries right after the 1917 Revolution. Here, in the United States, the control will be taken peacefully through a number of steps, like raising taxes on businesses, implementing regulations to the point of making environment so unfriendly for businesses to exist, that people will stop any kind of entrepreneurship. They will be looking for government jobs. But the result will be the same - deterioration in each and every way of living.

My family has been on this land since 1633. We have lived through liberals and leftist and and the growth of evil in government. What we have not seen but that we told everyone last time to not vote for this president. We have never had a president who hated us this much.

Was talking with a friend from Poland, yesterday. He saw 15 years of Soviet rule. He’s been here for 10 years. He just shakes his head. He can’t believe we fell for the stereotypical communist.

This is Obama and the democrats/socialists’ plan. Every year thousands of pages of new government laws and regulations are being heaped upon businesses AND individuals( for example the 3000 pages of Obamacare which already spawned 13,0000 pages of government regulations).Obama needs to be defeated. The media hides every evil thing Obama does. The problem is government. We need to reduce the size of government and repeal the laws that created all this government

My family has been in America since 1968 after the Czech revolt. Mom and Dad were on “the list” and if it weren’t for a phone call from a gov’t friend, right before the tanks rolled in, I would not be here writing this.

ASSIMILATED under the banners of baseball, hotdogs, Star Trek and the American flag.

Want nothing to do with the Democrats.....NOTHING!!!

5 cents used to be 2, before Bernanke wrecked the dollar.

My family has been here since 1491. We had real communism here then.

And the last point I need to make: There obviously is a need for some social programs in a society. Any civilized society needs to provide support for the less fortunate, like people with disabilities, who cannot provide for themselves. And this country has an abundance of such programs.

What is admirable about people in this country is how compassionate and giving Americans are. Not because they were told by the government to give, but because they want to help. How many nonprofit organizations, not subsidized by the government are in the United States? Think about it. And I am not saying that Russian people are not compassionate or not giving. It’s not true. But when we are all equally poor, we have nothing to give.

Last part of the article and probably the major point?

In the course of his research for Solzhenitsyn: A Soul in Exile (Harper Collins), Joseph Pearch traveled to Moscow to interview the writer. The excerpt below is from that interview:

Solzhenitsyn: "In different places over the years I have had to prove that socialism, which to many western thinkers is a sort of kingdom of justice, was in fact full of coercion, of bureaucratic greed and corruption and avarice, and consistent within itself that socialism cannot be implemented without the aid of coercion. Communist propaganda would sometimes include statements such as 'we include almost all the commandments of the Gospel in our ideology.' The difference is that the Gospel asks all this to be achieved through love, through self-limitation, but socialism only uses coercion. This is one point.
"Untouched by the breath of God, unrestricted by human conscience, both capitalism and socialism are repulsive."
- Solzyhenitsyn

Today, with the example we have before us, these words have special significance.

"My family has been on this land since 1633. "

1632 here. Given the date, I assume your forebears came over with the Puritan migration, as did mine. As I look at the areas where they settled today (the New England states), I am disgusted with how the legacy of liberty they left has been pissed away by their descendants.

“You Americans know nothing about Communism,” told me once a Russian friend.

“Oh, yeah?!” I replied. “You Soviets don’t know nothing about Capitalism”

He called me an imperialist dog of reaction. It almost came to fists.

In the end, I said to him, “Louis,” his name was Louis, “I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.”

My family has been here since the 1630s on the ship America, but the young immigrant debarked in Jamestown and went about 30 miles north to take ownership of the recently purchased family plantation.

Back in the late 70s during the beginning of the West Coast war on commercial fishermen, a guy who was smuggled out of Czechoslovakia, said to me that what he was seeing was what he had left behind.

I had a friend who escaped to the US from Cambodia. When he arrived here in the US and looked around his first thought was ... “Now these people got communism right!”
