Clearly not a money-making venture.

I just sent this link to my friends and relatives and informed them that I wear size XLarge in short and long sleeve T shirts.

Also, our old 7 year Trax phone with over 3,000 accumulated minutes is an embarassment to our younger relatives with their fancy I phones and pads.

Culture clash.

I'm so old fashioned I remember a time when people only made a telephone call when there was a reason.

BOL!

We now turn on our 7 year old Trash phone, as one of my younger relatives calls it, when we go some place. In fact, sometimes my wife informs each younger relative that we are going out with and our Trash Phone is on.

We got tired of getting asked why our cell phone wasn’t on.

If we get no calls on our trip, my wife calls up each younger relative and tells them. That, we arrived safely, and apparently they don’t love us anymore as we didn’t get a call from them.

We'd have to pick up the receiver to make sure someone wasn't already on the party line. If you got a dial tone, you could push the switchhook three times and an operator would come on the line.

We lived on a farm at Fawn Grove, York County, PA right by the Mason-Dixon Line. We had a crank telephone. We were on a “party” line, and our phone number was 17-R-13, which means we were on Line 17 and our (R)ing (13) was 1 long ring and 3 short rings.

You heard everyone else’s rings on your line, too, but if you were polite you didn’t listen in to other folks’ calls. When you wanted to make a call, you put the earpiece to your ear to see if there was anyone else on the line. If you merely wanted to speak to a neighbor who was on the same line, you could just crank the phone to produce THEIR ring pattern. The Grove family’s number was 17-R-3, so you just gave 3 short cranks and they’d answer the phone.

You COULD get the operator by clicking the receiver cradle, but the “proper” way to summon her (Usually either Nettie Slenker or Ordella Hess) was to crank the handle with the earpiece still in the hanger, and then pick up the earpiece to hear the operator when she came on the line.

You’d tell her the phone number you wanted to reach, including long distance, and she’d make the connections and put the call through. In a really long distance call you could hear the operator leap-frogging through several exchanges, telling each successive operator what city and number was desired, until she finally reached the destination city and operator, who completed the call.
