Huge crowd for Romney shocks officials in Ohio town (1,000 expected, 8,500 show up!)

SIDNEY, Ohio -- Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney received a warm reception on a cold evening at the Shelby County Fairgrounds Wednesday as he addressed a crowd estimated at more than 8,500 people, more than eight times the number expected to turn out.

~ snip ~

Chris Gibbs, chairman of the Shelby County Republican Party, said the event was a "huge undertaking" but was an undeniable success.

"The Romney team was meticulous in organizing, and the ability to put on a production like this in such a short amount of time is fantastic," Gibbs said.

Attendance far surpassed the initial projection of about 1,000.

"I was initially concerned there were still folks outside when the program started," Gibbs said. The line stretched several deep the whole length of the fairgrounds and most of the way around the racetrack as the thousands patiently moved in.

a Crowd of 8,500 is equal to about 40% of the town of Sidney - population 21,000

minus children and people still at work, I’d say 40% of the town’s population might represent MOST of the adults

Do't overlook the people from outside the town itself. That's almost 1/4 of the total population of Shelby County.

Thanks for the context! I’m almost daring to hope that we will all be able to breathe a huge sigh of total relief in less than a month!

I didn't go. I wouldn't go without my gun, and they wouldn't let me in with it. However, our friends who did go said the crowd was very enthusiastic.

I too was surprised by the turnout as reported in the paper. I didn't expect that many people would turn out on a miserable night like we had. I hope this is a portent for election day.

Knowing what little I know about Sidney, I'm really not that surprised. It reminds me of some of the more conservative expressway towns here. It's almost exurban Dayton or close enough (Miami County next door) to it to get travelers. Maybe even Lima folks showed up. In addition, I think people underestimate how conservative Western Ohio is outside of the big cities like Toledo, Dayton, and the black parts of Cincy.

If Romney wins Ohio, it will be there, the three sububan Cincy counties, and suburban Columbus.

I don’t know if it’s the same event, but yesterday, from a Facebook page I receive, titled, “President Mitt Romney,” (This is a grass-roots page, not an official page from the campaign)it said this...”Thank you all patriotic Americans who love our great country! Over 11,000 people came to hear Mitt Romney speak tonight, they were expecting 3,000...God bless Ohio.

Ohio Governor John R. Kasich watches the Mitt speak in Sidney, Ohio. We the people can and will do this!!”

If we can crawl over broken glass for Romney/Ryan, surely a little rain won't hurt.

Thanks again...I love the way this one is bathed in light. Pretty!

Such things highlight to me that the election is not actually about anybody but the AMERICAN PEOPLE.

Doesn’t look like rain in any of the photos. I see blue sky and sunshine. Does look a little cold though.

The iPhone 5 has an excellent panoramic photo feature. I don’t have an iPhone, however.

I was in Dayton several times in the late 70s for several weeks at a time (NCR Boot Camp). Then, it already looked like Berlin in 1945 — a burned-out, gutted ruin. Dem rule, of course. I am amazed that there are any Democrats left in Ohio.

Yep, Zero is running ads in New Jersey. I have not seen ONE SINGLE YARD SIGN for Zero. And, I have only seen TWO CAR STICKERS!!

I believe he’s in deep doo doo here...

NJ will probably go demmie, but not a very large margin. I will go nuts if NJ flips to red.

My uncle played hockey for Miami of Ohio and he loved it there. He’s from a small city and it felt like home to him when he was a student-athlete. Really nice folks with small-town values. Pretty much the anti Ohio State LOL
