VPs mention of Presidential candidates by name
11 October 2012 | Mene Mene Tekel Upharsin

One particular aspect of the debate caught my attention other than the arguments over issues. How many times did each candidate mention by name the Presidential candidate with whom he is running?

TOPICS: Government; News/Current Events
KEYWORDS: biden; candidate; name; ryan; vanity
Interesting, if you re-watch the debate.

I did not see it all, but I noticed that Biden rarely mentioned Obama whereas Ryan spoke frequently and forcefully about Romney. An actual count would be interesting.

Biden said “the President” quite a bit, which to me is a way of trying to give his side some gravitas without having to mention 0bama by name. But if I were counting, I’d count “the President” the same as saying his name.

What matters more is the context and attitude when mentioning the other person’s name. Is the VP candidate supporting his partner or trying to hide behind him? Of course I’m biased, but I thought Biden was more often than not trying to invoke - and hide behind - the power of the Presidency. I thought Ryan was did a great job of holind his own and demonstrating his command of all the issues. I thought by saying “Romney” he was showing support for his running mate (which I liked), and trying to get his name imprinted on the minds of the voters (which I didn’t like, but is probably a necessary psychological technique).

I wanted to throw my shoe at the TV every time Biden would refer to Ryan as “my friend”. Ryan’s not your friend, dumbass!!!!

I think Crazy Joe avoided mentioning The Disaster.

Didn’t Paul Ryan only say “Joe” once when he was thanking “Joe” for the debate? “Joe” never acknowledged Paul Ryan that I recall except in disrespctful terms like “that guy” “my friend” and never even bothered to thank Paul Ryan for the debate. Jerky Biden, not Joe Biden.
Hmmmmm turkey jerky or turkey lurkey or? Worse?

I think Crazy Joe avoided mentioning The Disaster.

Exactly. He had to have been coached to NOT mention Obama because Obama is so disliked by many Americans.
