Panetta Warns of Dire Threat of Cyberattack on U.S.
New York Times ^ | October 11, 2012 | ELISABETH BUMILLER and THOM SHANKER

Posted on 10/12/2012 2:35:17 PM PDT by EBH

Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta warned Thursday that the United States was facing the possibility of a “cyber-Pearl Harbor” and was increasingly vulnerable to foreign computer hackers who could dismantle the nation’s power grid, transportation system, financial networks and government...

...Defense officials insisted that Mr. Panetta’s words were not hyperbole, and that he was responding to a recent wave of cyberattacks on large American financial institutions. He also cited an attack in August on the state oil company Saudi Aramco, which infected and made useless more than 30,000 computers.

But Pentagon officials acknowledged that Mr. Panetta was also pushing for legislation on Capitol Hill. It would require new standards at critical private-sector infrastructure facilities — like power plants, water treatment facilities and gas pipelines — where a computer breach could cause significant casualties or economic damage.

This wouldn’t have anything to do with your ‘take over of the Internet’ agenda would it, Leon?

*Sigh*

Shouldn't a defense secretary look more like this:

than this?:

I actually have trouble taking the man seriously some times just because of his looks.

Watching how many far east IPs try to hack my hole in the wall website really surprises me. I can’t imagine what the gov, or major banks, etc have to deal with.

Panetta, you could at least try an original plot. LOL!

From Star Trek "A Taste of Armageddon"

The landing party soon discovers that the entire war between the two planets is completely simulated by computers which launch wargame attacks and counterattacks, then calculate damage and select the dead.

Citizens reported as "killed" must submit themselves for termination by stepping inside a disintegration booth. Anan 7 informs Kirk that the simulated attacks and following executions is the agreed system of war decided by both sides in a treaty with Vendikar. A conventional war was deemed too destructive to the environments and societies of both planets.

I have had at least 12 phone calls from the guys from India telling me my computer is sending out messages over the internet and that they are from Microsoft or some software company and that I need to allow them to get on my computer and fix the problem. Thankfully I know of the scam. But, that does not stop them from calling me. I told them I was on to them but they still call. And if you try to redial the number they call from you get nothing.

If companies had put half the time, effort and money into being digitally secure that they’ve had to invest in being politically correct, we wouldn’t have this problem.

[It would require new standards at critical private-sector infrastructure facilities]

No thanks Comrade Panetta.

The private-sector doesn’t need to be “protected” ala the mandate of central government committees who couldn’t find their own arses with both hands and a SQL statement telling them exactly where to find it.
