The chances of Britain leaving the EU rose dramatically last night after it emerged that one of David Cameron’s closest Cabinet allies believes it is time to tell Brussels bluntly: “We are ready to quit.”

Education Secretary Michael Gove has told friends that, if there was a referendum today on whether the UK should cut its ties with Brussels, he would vote to leave.

He wants Britain to give other EU nations an ultimatum: “Give us back our sovereignty or we will walk out.” …

I can't claim any great knowledge on Europe but.... cooperation among its civilized nations (which means most of them) is a very good idea.Lowering trade barriers and tariffs,perhaps even to zero,is also probably a good idea.Free movement of people? I don't know,I suppose there's an argument to be made in favor just as there's one to be made in favor of free movement between the US and Canada (but certainly *NOT* Mexico).But the EU today is running the lives of people to a very destructive degree.Just go to youtube and search “Nigel Farage” to get details.

Europe is just a continent. I am not fond of how those in the European Union conflate the EU with the continent.

The European Union right from its beginning was intended to be a “superstate” (read: empire) from its beginnings way back in the 1950s. The Treaty of Rome back in 1957, which created the European Economic Community, had these words right in the preamble:

DETERMINED to lay the foundations of an ever-closer union among the peoples of Europe,
RESOLVED to ensure the economic and social progress of their countries by common action to eliminate the barriers which divide Europe,
AFFIRMING as the essential objective of their efforts the constant improvement of the living and working conditions of their peoples,
RECOGNIZING that the removal of existing obstacles calls for concerted action in order to guarantee steady expansion, balanced trade and fair competition,
ANXIOUS to strengthen the unity of their economies and to ensure their harmonious development by reducing the differences existing between the various regions and the backwardness of the less-favored regions,
DESIRING to contribute, by means of a common commercial policy, to the progressive abolition of restrictions on international trade,

Everything that the EU is today is laid out in that 1957 document, except of course the degree of political union seen today and the overbearing centralism.

Free Trade Globalism has failed. You cannot base your economy on giving away your wealth to other nations. Time to wake up and smell the cheap foreign goods.

Problem is that Free Trade has failed. There is zero evidence that Free Trade works. We have tried that globally for decades...and it just brings economic ruin, wealth redistribution, and socialism. That is the reality

We are going to have to get away from the decisions made at Bretton Woods, Rome, Doha, and all the other failed Free Trade Globalist decisions and agreements.

You get a lot of people quoting theories on how free trade works....but there are no facts supporting that it works.

The EU already stabbed the UK in the back last year by overriding their veto of the “fiscal union” alterations to the Treaty of Lisbon. There’s nothing good about the EU. It needs to be broken up from without before they get a chance to reorganize into something worse, because they will not break up from within—too many national leaders (look at Mario Rajoy for example, never mind Italy’s appointed PM Mario Monti) are subservient to the EU and sold out to it.

The EU won’t collapse. The elite politicians who support it are fanatics and will do anything to keep it going. The real danger is its possibly reorganizing into something far worse.

I would like to see a contrast in the development and progress in the Eu and in the later established GCC. The GCC dissolved ancient barriers to permit the free flow of people and trade within the member nations.

The experiment apparently is working. Unlike the repressive Brussels bureaucrats, Some degree of national control permits the arrangement to function and thrive.

The Gulf Cooperation Council is going the same way as the European Union; indeed some of the same seeds were planted as in the EU (common currency, union of peoples, that sort of thing). Back last spring, they declared that they were becoming a confederation, especially in response to Iran’s belligerence. The whole union of peoples thing is also based on Pan-Arabism, which was copied from Pan-Germanism (yes, that Pan-Germanism).

This sentiment needs some impetus on the other side of the pond. The national tenth-amendment-ignoring, Article-1-section-8-ignoring, government here in the US should be beaten back by the states, or "walk out".

You are using the term "free trade" as meaning something other than free trade. Free trade has always worked and there is plenty of history to back that up. Super regulated trade between nations, with America universally getting the short end of the stick, idiotically called "free trade" can't work for America long term.

This reminds me of all the hippies that hated deregulation because of what it did to california energy markets, while conviently ignoring that the industry was never deregulated. It was re-regulated and the polititcians called the re-regulation de-rgulation to cover their idiocy.

Cooperation is sometimes an extremely stupid idea, and if at some point in the future you gain enough knowledge of history you will realize that any peace in not necessarily better than any war.
