MARSEILLE, France (JTA) -- A Jewish man was attacked and rendered unconscious in a Paris metro, a local watchdog reported.
The 52-year-old victim entered the subway directly from his synagogue but wore no markings that would identify him as Jewish, according to a report on the late September incident by the National Bureau of Vigilance Against Anti-Semitism, or BNVCA, a nonprofit watchdog organization. The incident occurred on the eve of Rosh Hashanah.
He may have been targeted because of a Jewish philosophy book by the chief rabbi of Paris that he was reading in the metro when he was attacked, the report said.
The attackers, who are unknown, knocked the man unconscious with a sharp blow to his temple and did not steal anything from him as he lay unconscious on the subway floor. He sustained minor injuries.
A female passenger found the man lying on the floor and moved him out of the vehicle at Miromesnil station, near Champs-Elysees.

Isrealis honk at each other. Israelis bitch at each other. Israelis know how to fight, and they like their Arak booze and Goldstar beer. Astonishingly perhaps, however, they do not fight. A friend tells me this is because you never know when the jerk has killer skills of some sort, and everyone has served. There are practically NO “bar fights” or “street fights” in Israel. So to be fair, it is NEVER a good idea to try to knock a man down in Israel. Utterly unimaginable is the prospect of striking a man down in Israel because he is a Jew. That is what I meant.
True enough, but add into the equation that the cops in Israel can make anyone's life hell. You don't want to piss them off.
Nachum, I deeply respect you. But are you kidding? Or - are you associated with Israel Police? I know of no one who would agree with you, which is to say, I know no pro-Pal activists or terrorists. You know very well that a TX MD or VA State Trooper has twenty times the resources, power, and respect of Israel police. Only in Israel does the person caught speeding get out of the car to berate the cop, and speed away in a huff!
(smile) Never had that experience in Israel. Maybe for some it is like you say. I also know of Jewish folks who for whatever reason find themselves in "administrative detention". Ah well, I don't mean to demean the Jews who protect lives in Israel. I have many friends who have served.
