Ive not heard so much talk about Big Bird and Sesame Street since I was six years old! Ever since the first presidential debate this year, when Mitt Romney mentioned Big Bird, with reference to his desire to pull funding for PBS, something about the big yellow bird has been in the news on a daily basis. Now it looks like some bird brain has come up with a wacky idea to march on Washington, D.C., in support of Big Bird, on November 3, just three days before the election.
Though Romneys call for stripping subsidizing of PBS only really amounts to about $280 million, which is hardly any significant cut, there are still those determined to keep Big Bird on the government dole.

As if PBS could not survive without government funding. These protestors are actually insulting the network more than anything.
This reminds me of 1995 when Newt took over the House and Dems rallied against cuts to school luch program etc
And look at just how well the Government has done at school lunches lately. . .
Shows like Sesame Street are thriving, multimillion-dollar enterprises, DeMint wrote. According to the 990 tax form all nonprofits are required to file, Sesame Workshop President and CEO Gary Knell received $956,513 nearly a million dollars in compensation in 2008. And, from 2003 to 2006, Sesame Street made more than $211 million from toy and consumer product sales. Big Bird will be just fine without his federal subsidies.
Kids have gotten more and more stupid ever since Sesame Street began. Maybe it is actually time for SS to go away.
This is the real view to take from this mess. Back in the 1990s...the salary, benefits of PBS employees, and structure of the organization could have easily survived without gov’t funding. But they did the same thing as the various city governments of California did...they upped the salaries and packages of every single employee. In essence...they have a huge amount of cost related to just Sesame Street by itself. When you pay $300k to the guy playing Big Bird...you’ve back yourself into the corner. I bet there are at least twenty-five folks connected to Sesame Street who make in excess of $100k a year.
Every year, they go out and try to pull more donations out of the big companies...to continue this salary structure. If the US government even cuts a quarter of it’s money to them...it’ll cause a massive internal feud over who gets to stay and who has to leave.
They did this to themselves....just like the city governments, and there’s no escape clause here...except to terminate folks. Who wants a out-of-work guy whose resume is playing Big-Bird for $300k a year?
What’s ironic is that Toys-R-Us is another company that Bain Capital turned around. Hmmm, wonder if jug ears is aware of this fact?
KILL ALL MUPPETS!!!!
I can’t imagine how much some giant march of people dressed like muppets, or carrying muppet toys would help Romney in the final weekend of the election.
That sounds like something the shameless Obama camp would try to attribute to Romney.
Parents love Sesame Street because of the faux educational value of the show.
Plop your kid in front of the TV for hours at a time....guilt free.
