Cuba to end to exit permits for foreign travel

Cuba has announced it is removing the need for its citizens to obtain exit permits before travelling abroad.

State media said the move, to come into effect on 14 January next year, would "update" migration laws to reflect current and future circumstances.

Cubans currently have to go through a lengthy and expensive process to obtain a permit and dissidents are often denied them, correspondents say.

The move is the latest in a series of reforms under President Raul Castro.

The BBC's Sarah Rainsford, in Havana, says the exit permit process is hated by most Cubans.

Now all they will need to travel is a valid passport.

The changes also mean Cubans who have permanent residency on the island will be allowed to stay abroad for up to 24 months, instead of the current 11, without having to return to renew paperwork.

I hope this is true.

There are so many Cubans who have family and friends in America that love and miss them.

I hope and pray that many of them will now be reunited :-)

The south Florida Cuban community has many wonderful people in it. I once livid in Miami and have fond memories of friends there.

Too late for my friend’s wife. She is a doctor who could not get an exit visa so she recently planned and executed an escape from Cuba via boat. She had a Sat phone her American husband provided for her. They hit rough water and lost phone contact. He thought he lost her for good.

Then he got a call from a Coast Guard ship. “We have your wife.” She was granted whatever it takes to stay here legally and is proudly working towards citizenship. She will make a good citizen and contribute to our society.

Yep. Cuba is going to unload a massive amount of Cubans to reduce their population and financial woes. Guess who gets to support them now?

“Therefore, measures will remain to preserve the human capital created by the Revolution in the face of the theft of talent applied by the powerful.”

I believe that “human capital” means the same thing as “slaves of the State” in this context, correct?
