GM's Fuel Cell Plant Closes in Upstate NY (shocker!)
Politics on the Hudson ^ | 10/5/2012 | Joseph Spector

The upstate economy took another significant blow today as General Motors announced it will close its fuel cell plant in Honeoye Falls, just south of Rochester.

The decision means the 220 salaried employees who worked in the research and development facility won’t be employed in the area. The company said most of the employees will be offered the opportunity to transfer to the Global Powertrain Engineering Headquarters in Pontiac, Mich., the Democrat and Chronicle reports.

“This decision has significant business advantages for the company,”said Kim Carpenter, GM spokeswoman.

“For example, it will enable GM to capitalize on synergies with the rest of the powertrain and vehicle organizations. The majority of the GM employees will be offered the option to relocate in Michigan.”

I hope this isn't a duplicate post as I searched on keywords and titles before posting.

This is a well buried item in the local liberal news; however I found out about it from a NEW CO-WORKER who is a TOTAL SCREAMING GREENIE LIB. Her husband works for the DEC (EPA's biological extrusion) and she has worked in Planning and Mapping for various gov't entities as well. She mentioned this in a casual conversation about house hunting in the Honeoye area. I couldn't resist and said "so I thought GM was ALIVE?!" She responded with nervous laughter!

How desperate must Government Motors be that they did not hang onto this news until after the election...

Can you imagine the wave of layoff notices at green enterprises scheduled to go out on Wednesday, November 7, 2012?

Those upstate NY workers will be thrilled with the offer to move to Detoilet.

Kinda like an offer to go to prison, complete with bars on the doors and windows, and everyone outside carrying guns.

Axeing 220 employees is a business advantage. Sounds like the White House is writing their press releases.

What a crock!. They have internet and telephone, and with that you can have all the synergy you need.

The subsidy must have run out.

So... was this decision based on the realization that hydrogen fuel-cell batteries can never generate power, but only store it? That the hype about fuel cells was never true?

It's true, everyone that lives close to Detoilet has to put bars on doors and windows to keep the crackheads from breaking in.

AbolishCSEU~ :”.. I couldn’t resist and said “so I thought GM was ALIVE?! ... “

This is a case of GM cutting Research & Developement for the sake of preserving manufacturing ( think: union )jobs.

I thought Biden said last week in the Vice Presidential debate that : “ Obama saved the automotive industry “
Maybe he meant .. union jobs ?

OK, true, but seriously, how can 250-500 layoffs affect the economy??

Plenty of nice places to live around and near Pontiac, if you like boating, jetskiing, canoeing, sailing, fishing, etc.

How far is this closed plant from Hofstra University, the site of tonight’s town hall show? When BO whines about Bain closing some businesses, Romney should point out that even Government Motors closes unsustainable businesses, such as this one, Many other “green” companies have failed after receiving huge government subsidies.

However, the BIG difference is that when Bain does it, it loses private money. When the government does it, it is losing the taxpayers’ money.

250-500 here...250-500 there...soon you have quite a few people laid-off or fired.

More importantly, it appears that the nobamites have weirdly “saved” GM.

I'm sure there are many nice places in Michigan, for the humor of the article, DETROIT comes to mind.

Humor aside, I didn't get the impression that you understand that there are nice places near Pontiac, and not just "in Michigan."

The plant is almost 350 miles from the debate. Hempstead is on Long Island and the plant is near the great lake Ontario
