Good question. I hardly post at all anymore, because I rarely have anything useful to add, haha. But I still come here multiple times a day and browse. I feel lost without FR during debates, elections, crises, etc. I use to feel that way when I couldn’t access a computer, during an event, but now I can get it on my phone anywhere. I really hope we are up and running for the next debate or at least the election.

The worst news is that 25% of voters switched their vote to Romney and 25% wen to Obama.

I'm not buying this either. They are basically saying 50% of the people they polled switched their vote. Didn't happen.

Maybe the feds are shutting it down thinking we’re sending messages to Romney. They really are that paranoid.

Chrissy Tingles said the women voters aren’t going to like Romney interupting obama. No, that’s not a typo. I’m not sure we watched the same debate. Well, I KNOW Chrissy didn’t see the same debate.

You may be onto something here.

This is the third (or perhaps fourth, and last) Freepathon that is budgeted to collect extra money over & above quarterly expenses, for the purchase of new equipment...mainly servers.

IIRC, targeted donations are also accepted for the purpose.

Jim has done a/some thread(s) about it several months ago.

I didn’t even bother trying to get on the live debate thread tonight or even FR in general until 2 hours post-debate. It’s just what it is, there is less traffic here than in the past due to purges but the site still runs slow, especially when interest is high and this place is most looked to.

But it’s a great big wide internet so when this place is predictably crawling there are other places to go. No use complaining

People on food stamps want free cars, TVs, and apartments on Central Park. They think they have a better chance with Obama.

I’ve been reading all the issues with the site ... and seems like it once worked, now doesn’t, either because more users than in older days, or new system with DB configuration problems.

I’m going to hazard a swag, based on behavior, that the issue is a ‘round trips to the database’ issue, not a hardware-based server / web-server performance issue ... especially if the servers aren’t that old.

And that either
1. The database itself is either not powerful enough, or not configured properly, so hits a critical mass of connections, hanging requests long enough for them to time out (or just a long time in queue.)
2. or no DB connection pooling? (or connection pooling not configured for the profile of traffic) - so 1 new connection per request.
3. The strategy for caching pages, if there is one, is not being used or is insufficient.
4. DB located on different physical server, with a thin pipe between the weber server and DB Server.

Main guess, not knowing any tech specs for the site, is that the issue is database related, specifically connection related, and fixable via configuration, assuming the database is powerful enough in the first place. Too many round trips, too much construction and deconstruction of db connections - which is usually the bottleneck.

Or, could just be that the tables aren’t well indexed, and/or the SQL queries aren’t well optimized.

I could be full of stuff or malarky, not knowing the architecture of the site or the traffic stats. Just seems to me that other than db connection issues, there is no reason for it to be hanging - especially if it’s true that the hardware is relatively new.

Conceivable too that it’s table locking issues / pessimistic/optimistic issues.

... for what it’s worth ...

For what it is worth, Hot Air had no problems. Maybe FR needs a live debate option which does not go to the main database. Just tracking a current comment feed is trivial.

Agreed - although one would think that during the debate, 95% of the traffic is on the debate thread anyway.

Somewhere between Mr. Browser and Mr. Server, more specifically between Mr. Internets and Mr. server (s) someone is doing more work than is necessary. Could not-db-related web server code, more likely DB connections and/or long running queries.

No images are actually being served from FR, so it’s just text. Other ideas are that perhaps tables need to be archived, could be trying to insert/update into large indexed tables ... but that starts getting into needing to know what DB is in use.

I’d be looking at my database and database interactions rather than hardware. SWAG.

http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2012/oct/18/welfare-spending-jumps-32-percent-four-years/

Welfare spending has grown substantially over the past four years, reaching $746 billion in 2011 — or more than Social Security, basic defense spending or any other single chunk of the federal government — according to a new memo by the Congressional Research Service.

The steady rise in welfare spending, which covers more than 80 programs primarily designed to help low-income Americans, got a big boost from the 2009 stimulus and has grown, albeit somewhat more slowly, in 2010 and 2011. One reason is that more people are qualifying in the weak economy, but the federal government also has broadened eligibility so that more people qualify for programs.

See for the typical Obama voter the economy has improved,
