The Obama campaign has ramped up its email microtargeting efforts, sending messages asking supporters on its email list to contact specific individuals in states with early voting to remind them to vote.

They target individuals on a much deeper level than this. Their data-mining operations follow individuals based on the on-line groups they belong to, their searches, their credit card data, anything available to them through google, facebook, friends that are active in the campaign
etc etc. They develop psychological voter profiles and fit these targets into the proper profile. They then target them with messages, images, videos etc specifically designed to touch on their emotional triggers.
For instance, last election I had a now former employee that was a radical animal rights type and total misanthrope that pretty much openly hated black people. She had her inbox filled with videos of wolves being slaughtered from airplanes in Alaska with the suggestions that it was Sarah Palin’s fault, she also had individuals that she was friends with working on her every day. She not only voted for the first time, but took the day off and traveled back to her home state to vote. She even threw a party because she was so pleased that she had gotten revenge on Sarah Palin. Of course, this all has nothing to do with the presidential election, wolves still get shot out of airplanes, but when you’re talking about emotionally unstable people reality isn’t what motivates them and logic sure doesn’t enter the equation.
Obama will spend near $7,000 per voter this election. If you have that much to spend you can afford to pay to target individuals.
