Gun in Denver airport bathroom was Houston DEA agent's

The loaded .45-caliber Glock handgun left in a crowded Denver International Airport bathroom belonged to a Drug Enforcement Administration agent based in Houston, according to records obtained on Tuesday.

The gun, with one round in the chamber and 10 in the magazine, was found by a traveler last week on the back of a toilet seat beyond Transportation Security Administration checkpoints, according to a Denver police report.

It was later returned to the agent, who was traveling on Southwest Airlines from Denver to Houston.

The DEA has stayed mum on the gun, declining to confirm the agency's ties to the incident.

"Incidents such as the one you described ... fall within the scope of an (internal) investigation and DEA does not confirm, deny or comment on internal investigations," Lisa Johnson, spokeswoman for the DEA's Houston Division, said in response to a Chronicle query.

Of course, it's not a Glock, it's a 1911 style that requires me to unsafe it, and cock it before that first round can be fired.

You carry a 1911 with a round in the chamber and the hammer down?

Sounds like a Glock model 30. Its standard mag is 10 rounds, but it can hold the larger-capacity mag of the Glock Model 21.

Sorry. Didn’t mean to start a Holy War. Especially with armed adversaries!

Thanks, I had only seen or noticed “accidental discharge” before.

“What kind of idiot walks around with a gun with a round in the chamber on a daily basis?”

I had to think about that one for a while and eventually at first was willing to give a COP a pass on it for being able to have 11 rounds at the ready.

Until I realized if that was the cop’s motivation, then they should/would have had a SIXTEENTH round chambered if they would use a 15-round magazine.

So in answer to your question, I’m guessing it’s an IGNORANT, NEGLIGENT idiot who walks around on a regular basis with a round chambered.

I don’t even like to LOAD the 5th or 6th round in a revolver, so I don’t have to worry about the one all set to go.

Unless my belly tells me to, of course.

Yep. Have for many years. There is after all, a detent position for the hammer between full cock and where it actually fires, so the hammer isn't resting on the firing pin.

It is NOT too hard to drop one’s trousers and lower the “rig” to the floor, when using a commode—be sure to clean the area first. (Or to learn to use the zip fly when pissing at a urinal. I laugh when I find an HG on top of a urinal. I make the gun owner wait until I am through—it really pisses me off when they don’t “Hey, I am busy here!”).

For those of us who carry every day and want to eliminate the risk of misplacing one’s weapon, we adopt the practice of NEVER removing the weapon from the holster unless justified. Relieving oneself is not grounds for drawing the weapon and/or losing control of it.

Those who feel the need to unholster need to reevaluate their carry rig or mode of carry (better belt, better holster, different holster, pack, ... )

Thank you for the education.

Please excuse my ignorance.

So I can understand a cop wanting 10% more firepower, but a cop smart enough to think that through shouldn’t be giving away free firearms in airport restrooms.

Didn’t mean to start a Holy War.

Throwing the term "idiot" around on an internet forum, amongst intelligent and educated folks who do the very thing you're calling "idiotic", is a superb way to start a "holy war".

FYI.

“In a life or death situation, will you have enough time to chamber a round?”

Yes, thanks to a couple of other posts, I’m willing to give a responsible cop a pass on chambering a round.

Unfortunately, though, this cop wouldn’t qualify.

I guess we all have our own definition of readiness. Without a round in the chamber, you’re carrying around a small club. If you are not comfortable carrying with a round in the chamber, get some training until you are.

When defending yourself with deadly force is merited, if your firearm is not loaded, you are assuming a) that you’ll have time to rack the slide b) that you will have full use of both hands/arms to rack the slide c) that you’ll have presence of rational mind to rack the slide rather than pointing an unloaded firearm at the bad guy, pulling the trigger and wondering why it does not go bang.

At that point, you’re probably better off pulling out the knife.

Wow! Technically accurate gun reporting!

I can't begin to imagine the pucker factor when your "belly" fails to tell you to load those other two rounds and your firearm goes "click, click" while the need for the firearm likely escalates. Fun times...

It’s a practical problem for all CCW folks who carry a (fairly) heavy pistol concealed on their belt. What to do with it in the john? Drop trou with the pistol on the belt, too heavy, hard to do.

When dropping trou, rebuckle the belt more loosely, and use a Larry Craig stance to keep the belt tight about your upper calves, keeping the rig from dropping.

Hanging it on the door puts it up for grabs.

Thank you for posting exactly what my thoughts are.

In addition, many commercial fixtures like sinks and towel dispensers are deliberately designed with rounded or sloping tops so hothing can be laid on top (and forgotten) by restroom users. An amazing number of watches, rings, etc. are left behind in bathrooms.Ask any cleaning company or janitor.

5.11 makes tactical pants for women that have a drop seat because of the patrol belt restroom problem... Sounds like a good solution for the guys, too.

I'd just like to applaud this writer for saying 'round' and 'magazine' instead of 'bullet' and 'clip.'

All of us who carry 1911-style firearms. The 1911 is designed to be carried with a round in the chamber and the safety on.

For what it's worth.... I don't pretend to be an expert, but I have 5- and 6-shot capacity revolvers and didn't mean that I would leave two barrels empty. I am careful to leave the empty barrel "chambered", so if I pull the trigger, I will have 4 or 5 shots before that first click.

I also enjoy the "triple facepalm"

And the "Godzilla facepalm"

Better question. What kind of idiot doesn’t? If you’re gonna carry, be ready to use your weapon.
