Third-party candidates could tilt election outcome in closely fought states

WASHINGTON — They campaign in near anonymity, these third-party contenders who stand no shot at the presidency. Their supporters are castigated for wasting their votes. But don’t write them off just yet. In hotly contested swing states, their presence on the ballot may alter the course of the election.

In Virginia, where Mitt Romney and President Obama are running neck and neck, former Republican congressman Virgil Goode’s crusade for the Oval Office could draw conservatives and tip the state away from Romney. In “live free or die” New Hampshire, Libertarian Gary Johnson, the former Republican governor of New Mexico, is a wild card, potentially siphoning votes from both Romney and Obama. And in Colorado, where a marijuana initiative is on the ballot, Johnson’s support for legalizing marijuana could hurt Obama among young voters.

Also running are Green Party nominee Jill Stein, a physician from Lexington who had run against Romney for Massachusetts governor in 2002, and Rocky Anderson, of the newly formed Justice Party and a former Democratic mayor of Salt Lake City.

The Romney and Obama campaigns scoff at the possibility of a third-party spoiler. But Goode’s popularity among some Virginians worried Republican leaders enough that they tried to strike the Constitution Party nominee from the ballot in the battleground state. Republican voters have urged Goode to withdraw, and Virginia’s Republican governor, Bob McDonnell, has even gone on air warning that a vote for Goode would only help keep Obama in the White House.

“In an incredibly tight election, any number of votes going to a third party could be significant,” said Whit Ayres, a GOP strategist. “You can never dismiss any concern. Just ask Ralph Nader and Al Gore.”

Gore’s narrow loss to Republican George W. Bush in 2000 was widely attributed to Nader, the Green Party nominee

dream on. Johnson is pulling more support from O than Romney. Third party candidates are generating something on the order of 2% or less. And not in the states that are that close so...as usual....EPIC FAIL

The thesis is getting old and hoary with age. The fact is most people don't have to vote ~ they can go and vote for a Senator and no one else. Or, they could vote for a Representative and a Senator and no one else.

Some show up with no interest whatsoever in national politics, but they vote against bond issues since they will ultimately raise their property tax burdens.

Imagining that third party candidates DRAW people away from voting for the major party candidates is, of course, total delerium. If those folks were going to vote for those candidates they would do so anyway.

Remember, when it comes to politics, it's all about me and my vote, and if I don't want to give it to you, tough. Grin and bear it.

A messege to those who plan to vote 'third party':

“Surely, my fellow Americans understand that they have only ONE chance to remove a communist cabal from power peacefully. That chance is November 6, 2012… Who can afford to focus on anything else?

No true Patriot will be sitting out the election at home this time. No decent American will sit on the sidelines in some futile 3rd party fantasy or protest. There is simply too much at stake.

We currently have a known enemy of our nation residing in the people’s White House. The people didn’t have the good sense to stop it in 2008. The courts didn’t have the courage to stop it or rectify the disaster after the 2008 election. Congress hasn’t had the backbone to correct the fraud and hold all accountable, even after the 2010 cycle that swept so-called Tea Party candidates into political power. Not even state governments have the honor and courage to block a known fraud from appearing on the ballot again in 2012.

That means that righting the greatest wrong ever perpetrated in American politics is left to the American people alone. They will get ONE CHANCE to end this charade, peacefully, on November 6th. If they fail to end it peacefully, they will be left with only a Second Amendment solution. There is no other solution at that point.

When did communism become an American Dream for some? A long time ago… When the American people allowed it.

When did the communist dream become acceptable to the rest of America? Only YOU can answer this one, on November 6th, 2012.

No American can afford to sit this one out or play childish games with fantasy candidates. — Removing this criminal communist cabal from power is the ONLY relevant issue of the 2012 election. Only a traitor, a coward or a fool would tell you any different!”

Folks that believe this line of BS are being sold a bill of goods IMHO. I don't question their patriotism, their character or thier common sense, unlike those that demand others vote for a liberal with a R behind his name....

Go ahead and stay home or vote 3rd party ‘to show the Repubs something’.
Just know you will have helped to put the gay, Marxist/Muslim usurper pos back in the White House for another four years.

No true Patriot will be sitting out the election at home this time. No decent American will sit on the sidelines in some futile 3rd party fantasy or protest. There is simply too much at stake.

Perhaps instead of accusing Americans of non-being Patriots, better time would be spent finding candidates that don't support abortion, "assault" weapons bans, fags in the military, and fag "marriage."

No American can afford to sit this one out or play childish games with fantasy candidates. — Removing this criminal communist cabal from power is the ONLY relevant issue of the 2012 election. Only a traitor, a coward or a fool would tell you any different!”

(R) Party of Stupid - your table is waiting; fear is not a campaign platform. Refusing to back down on abortion, 2nd Amendment RIGHTS, and the sanctity of marriage is neither childish nor fantasy. Only a coward, traitor or foolish sheep would cast aside their morals, values, and beliefs in favor of a party-line vote in hopes the candidate with opposite beliefs will be their savior and rescue them.

I do not understand how people think it will be much different under Myth. Because a (R) Kongress will hold his feet to the fire? Would that be House Republicans that voted against the bailout, waited for it to be loaded with pork and then voted for it? Will that be (R) in the Senate that are doing such a good job with Tea Party favorite Scott Brown?

In search for an "anything has to be better" candidate we have allowed the (R) nominee to be someone with much of the same views. Both favor arming "rebels" [read "Al-Qa'ida"] in Syria and other muslim countries. Both favor the destruction of marriage. Both favor homos in the military. Both favor "assault" weapons bans. Both support abortion.

For the ABO voters out there, I pose these questions - If Hillary Clinton switched parties and became an (R) would you vote for her against 0bama?

If so, then why are you a (R)?

If not, why not? Does she not support the above the same as Myth? Isn't she the "lesser of two evils" between 0 and her?

The lesser of two evils will always bring you evil.

In my minds eye, I see no difference. One candidate is an evil worshiper of a false pedophile prophet and moon god; the other is an evil worshiper of a false prophet with magic rocks and believes one day he will become a god.

I’ll say the same to you as to the other guy who intends to ‘sit it out’ or vote 3rd party: go ahead and stay home or vote 3rd party ‘to show the Repubs something’.

Just know you will have helped to put the gay, Marxist/Muslim usurper pos back in the White House for another four years.

Anyone stupid enough to run as "third party" is doing it to fulfill their own bloated egos--to hell with their country. They are not about to listen to reason and logic.

Because of 3000 "third party" voters in MN, we end up with that crazy Al Frankenstein and also Obamacare. These people are dangerous but they don't care.

I'm not staying home to show anybody anything. I'm staying home because none of the candidates are representative of my values.

Not even the 75% metric proposed by Reagan. In fact, I can't even find 50% that I agree with Myth.

Have fun with your "I suck less" candidate.

Then your mind is comprised of mud clouding your vision. Sorry to be blunt, but no human with an IQ over 12 can fail to see a difference between Obama and Romney.

Sorry to be blunt, but no human with an IQ over 12 can fail to see a difference between Obama and Romney.

What candidate supports "assault" weapons bans and the Brady Bill?

What candidate supports waiting times for gun purchases?

What candidate is against weapons that "threaten police?"

What candidate supports baby murder?

What candidate supports gays in the Boy Scouts

What candidate supports fags in the military?

What candidate supports "benefits" for "domestic partnerships?"

What candidate supports giving "rebels" [Al-Qa'ida] weapons in Syria?

What candidate supports socialized medicine?

You may want to rethink who you believe has mud clouding their vision because the answer to every question I posed is BOTH Romney AND 0bama.

You and other 3rd party CRANKS will help THE MARXISTS get RE-ELECTED..

Who cares about social issues?

Everything is a social issue. The economy is a social issue. It all ties in together.

It is not possible to be a social liberal and an economic conservative. Social liberalism requires massive taxes and redistribution.
