VANCOUVERA tsunami warning was issued late Saturday for the coastal areas of northwest British Columbia following a 7.7 magnitude earthquake off the waters near Prince Rupert. It was followed by at least aftershocks.
People in coastal areas were told to move inland to higher ground while residents in low-lying coastal areas were ordered to be on alert for instructions from their local emergency officials after the tsunami warning was issued just before 8 p.m. local time.
The epicentre was reported in coastal waters about 40 kilometres south of Sandspit, B.C. at a depth of 19 kilometres.
Natural Resources Canada issued a statement Saturday: A major earthquake occurred in the Haida Gwaii region. It was felt across much of north-central B.C., including Haida Gwaii, Prince Rupert, Quesnel and Houston. There have been no reports of damage at this time.

Some coastal areas of Hawaii could experience sea-level changes and strong or unusual currents tonight from a 7.7-magnitude earthquake off British Columbia.
But no Pacific-wide tsunami is expected and there is no threat to Hawaii, said the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, based in Ewa Beach.
Some coastal areas of Hawaii could experience small nondestructive sea level changes and strong or unusual currents lasting up to several hours, the center said in a bulletin.
Those effects were expected to begin around 10:58 p.m. Saturday.
The quake in the Queen Charlotte Islands region occurred at 5:04 p.m. Hawaii time, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

At least, there were aftershocks, it seems.
Global warming strikes again
Hello we now have a tsunami warning - that’s the higher level than a watch. Hawaii low lying folks - move upland.
Yes, it would be a good idea to move at least 4 inches upland if the tsunami experience along the Alaskan coast is any indication.
Yes indeed:
Tsunami warning issued for Hawaii, 10:28 p.m. expected arrival

EVALUATION
A TSUNAMI HAS BEEN GENERATED THAT COULD CAUSE DAMAGE ALONG
COASTLINES OF ALL ISLANDS IN THE STATE OF HAWAII. URGENT ACTION
SHOULD BE TAKEN TO PROTECT LIVES AND PROPERTY.
A TSUNAMI IS A SERIES OF LONG OCEAN WAVES. EACH INDIVIDUAL WAVE
CREST CAN LAST 5 TO 15 MINUTES OR MORE AND EXTENSIVELY FLOOD
COASTAL AREAS. THE DANGER CAN CONTINUE FOR MANY HOURS AFTER THE
INITIAL WAVE AS SUBSEQUENT WAVES ARRIVE. TSUNAMI WAVE HEIGHTS
CANNOT BE PREDICTED AND THE FIRST WAVE MAY NOT BE THE LARGEST.
TSUNAMI WAVES EFFICIENTLY WRAP AROUND ISLANDS. ALL SHORES ARE AT
RISK NO MATTER WHICH DIRECTION THEY FACE. THE TROUGH OF A TSUNAMI
WAVE MAY TEMPORARILY EXPOSE THE SEAFLOOR BUT THE AREA WILL
QUICKLY FLOOD AGAIN. EXTREMELY STRONG AND UNUSUAL NEARSHORE
CURRENTS CAN ACCOMPANY A TSUNAMI. DEBRIS PICKED UP AND CARRIED
BY A TSUNAMI AMPLIFIES ITS DESTRUCTIVE POWER. SIMULTANEOUS HIGH
TIDES OR HIGH SURF CAN SIGNIFICANTLY INCREASE THE TSUNAMI HAZARD.
THE ESTIMATED ARRIVAL TIME IN HAWAII OF THE FIRST TSUNAMI WAVE IS
1028 PM HST SAT 27 OCT 2012
MESSAGES WILL BE ISSUED HOURLY OR SOONER AS CONDITIONS WARRANT.
Hawaii PD and Civil Defense going into action at this time
The height of a tsunami in one area isn’t reliable enough indicator of how high it will be in another — not reliable enough to bet your life on.
I realize the shape of the seafloor, tides, distance, and direction can influence the height, but felt these warnings were a little overblown considering the early measurements along the Alaskan shore. Both the amplitude and period were wrong.
The shape of the coastline, and the presence (or absence) of sheltering islands are also important factors. My point was (and remains) simply: don’t bet your life against tsunami warnings.
Far be it from me to ignore warnings of natural disaster — many of my neighbors think I’m nuts with all the prepping I do (couldn’t conceal all of it like the bugout van LOL). Given a legitimate threat, I’d be the first up the hill other than pushing my family in front of me. But when the data start coming in benign it’s time to relax.
This is the day after. How was the tsunami?
Exactly. I would rather laugh the next day at the small changes brought about by the tsunami than to lose my life or those of my loved ones who decided to ignore any warning. Makes me wonder if we learned anything at all from Banda Ache or Japan.
