As millions of dollars pour into negative TV ads in the final days of the 2012 presidential campaign, former Democratic presidential candidate Michael Dukakis recalled how his hopes for the White House in 1988 were destroyed by negative ads linking him to rapist and murderer Willie Horton.

“It all started first with me,” said Dukakis, now 79 but still working full time. "If I had beaten the old man, we never would have heard of the kid [George W. Bush], and we wouldn't be in this mess.

Al Gore first used Willie Horton in the primary, and Michael Dukakis is a leftwing baffoonish failure.

Liberals are all alike and never change. However much they fail, it is always someone else's fault.

Telling the truth about someone and his record was letting the nation see the real Michael Dukakis.

Maybe he doesn’t agree but that’s what the country thought at the time - it didn’t want him and his liberal policies.

exactly. And his response to Bernard Shaw's first Question.

By '92 Dems like Bob Menendez were calling themselves progressives. Dukakis- Card carrying Liberal indeed.

Another thing with this train of thoughts is that implied untruth told in negative ads.

Maybe, maybe some of the negative ads were lies or exagerated telling.

But liberals (or any loser for that matter) always thought voters based their judgements and choices solely on ads.

"Hey, don't look at me, my past quotes, or my records; Look at how bad the other guy is."

“It all started first with me,” said Dukakis.

Wrong, as usual.

In ‘92 I met Menendez running for Congress in Bayonne , he said he was progressive not a liberal. Dukakis killed term “liberal”. “Liberal” got much play on All in the Family

In 1964 they told me that if I voted for Goldwater, we’d have riots in the cities and half a million troops in Vietnam. They were right, I voted for Goldwater and we had riots in the cities and half a million troops in Vietnam.

That was another slight of hand by the media. They used to use blue for whichever party won. Then they decided that red was bad ( communist association ) so they made it the permenate republican color. Never made sense to me. Everyone knows the dems are a bunch of commies.

RE: Gore first used Willie Horton ads in the primaries. . . .

That's right and I corrected another error.

ABOUT THE WRITER

Ben Barber has written about the developing world since 1980 for Newsday, the London Observer, the Christian Science Monitor, Salon.com, Foreign Affairs, the Washington Times and USA TODAY. From 2003 to August, 2010, he was senior writer at the U.S. foreign aid agency. is a skid mark on Journalism's shorts.

.. worse of all Michael Dukakis, et al. really believe that it is not their fault, they have no deficiencies at all. None! They were cheated.

Dangerous people those Marxist-Alinsky radicals -- especially the younger ones

and the ideological issue of the 1960s nutcases.

The media “newspeak” began with the 2000 election night. The GOP stupidly refused to rebuke it. No Conservative party anywhere on the planet has “red” for its color. “Red” has always been the hallmark of the left. Fortunately, Dave Leip keeps the colors “correct” on his website...
