Hurricane Sandy barrels toward East Coast, expected to bring 'life-threatening' storm surge
FoxNews.com ^ | October 29, 2012 | Fox News

The East Coast is bracing Monday for the impact of a powerful Category 1 hurricane as it barrels toward the mid-Atlantic with 95 mph winds and a storm surge that forecasters called "life-threatening."

Hurricane Sandy bore down on the East Coast early Monday, its front edge sending tide-enhanced surges over boardwalks from Delaware to New Jersey a full 12 hours before the eye of the enormous, 900-mile wide storm was to make landfall. Some 60 million people live in the path of the mega-storm and many likely face power outages in the coming hours and days.

The National Guard was deployed along the densely-populated Atlantic coast, and public transportation in New York, Philadelphia and Washington D.C., was suspended. Airports were expected to shut down by Monday afternoon as the weather system experts are calling "Frankenstorm" churned in from the sea. The hurricane is on a collision course with a winter storm and a cold front, and high tides from a full moon make it a rare hybrid storm that could be felt all the way to the Great Lakes.

Yesterday I called my son who lives in WV. He commutes to northern VA daily, and his wife commutes to the school where she teaches in a MD suburb of DC. Already yesterday her school was closed. Haven't heard whether he'll go to work today, but I doubt it.

I saw that after I posted the thread.

I did a keyword search but didn’t see it until after I had posted it, then saw it in the sidebar.

I even did a keyword search. I should have remembered to do a google search. It works better than FR’s search engine.

Good plan. I think winds won't do a whole lot of major damage...apart from downed trees and limbs on power lines and homes. Won't see a whole lot of structural damage due strictly to winds. But...minor damage will add up to a lot due to shear size of area impacted.

Power and surge are the issues. Already a report out on economic impacts - $30-40 Billion in economic loss. I always think that part is overblown. It's like people boycotting gas pumps on "Tuesday." Doesn't do any good because people just buy their gas on Monday or Wednesday....

I can’t imagine.

They’re already closing schools here and the winds have BARELY started picking up.

We used to go to Stone Harbor, NJ for a couple weeks every summer. According to this, they’ve received 2.53 inches of rain already since midnight. The full brunt of the storm is not expected until later tonight.

We’re pretty far out in the sticks and when power goes out, it’s hours before it gets fixed on a good day.

If there’s widespread power outages, I don’t expect them to make our sparely populated little town a priority. We’re ready, though.

Perhaps pinging or FReepmailing the Admin Mod.

This is going to affect a LOT of people.

I asked the mods to put it at the top of the breaking news bar.

This needs to be seen because of the sheer number of people that this storm will have an impact on.

If terrorist could create a storm and were behind Sandy our commander-and-thief would blame it on a Weather Channel video and simply say “an ongoing investigations is underway”.

I live in north central CT. Currently we have some gusts of wind, but nothing major yet. WFSB just reported that a Substation in Bridgeport was compromised by water. Scheduled shutdown by noon affecting approx 35K.

I’ve heard that at Milwaukee, there will be 17 ft. waves down on the lake shore tomorrow related to this storm. If that’s true I might make a trip to Kenosha harbor to verify. To be sure, I won’t be getting to close.

They’re already closing schools here and the winds have BARELY started picking up.

I live in the northern NYC suburbs. Even the most "doom and gloom" and "we're all going to die," predictions show the storm hitting this evening long after school would have closed for the day, and yet every school and gov't office decided yesterday morning that they should close today, regardless of the storm track. The private sector is alive and kicking. Stores and businesses are all open. Banks are open. Bars and restaurants are open. Good thing too, because all the public employees who stayed home today due to the mere possibilty of wind and rain this evening are going to be looking for something to do this afternoon. Don't get me wrong: There are places that need to shut down now, such as coastal areas in Delaware, Maryland, Southeast Pennsylvania, and New Jersey. But to make a decision yesterday to shut down the entire economy beginning this morning in areas where the storm is not expected to be anything more than a normal rain event until this evening is absolutley ridiculous in my opinion.

Couldn’t agree more. I have a business in a coastal town of New Jersey and I am open for business today (at least for a few hours). My kids go to school in Union County and it is ridiculous that they are closed today when it isn’t that bad yet, weatherwise.

It does seem like the places hardest to be hit by this storm are highly populated, heavily democrat areas.

Went into work at 6:30 this morning....saw a few patients and we decided to close early (I’m on Long Island). We also decided to open late tomorrow, at noon, for emergencies.

Looks like I’m not going in tomorrow. Anywho, I came home and my computer was off,but was not an electric failure (clocks not blinking). Looks like cable. So I went to turn on my computer and it was just beeping and NOT working!

My wonderful landlords got a new laptop and they said I could have their old one (this one), once they cleaned it up.

I called the wife and begged for a favor...if I could borrow this laptop until I can get my computer fixed. She is so wonderful she gave it to me in a heartbeat.

I could NOT imagine not having access to FR, or Rush....WABC still has whore-aldo on covering the storm instead of Rush on radio.

I’ll be plugged in until we lose power (hopefully not). Bottom line....there ARE still many a good soul out there.

She also told me if we do lose electric, they have plenty of food and wine and have a wood burning stove, so I can always go up and heat up my food.

I didn’t take this seriously until today. I also found a place to park so the dead trees around here do not destroy my truck!

Is FR REALLY slow or is it just me?

It’s not you.

It’s slow.

Probably lots of traffic cause of the storm.

Not to mention that it’s FReepathon time.
