Why Liberals Think What They Do ... Victor Davis Hanson
PJ Media ^ | 30 Oct 2012 | Victor Davis Hanson

Note that Barack Obama is running not on his liberal record, but as a challenger against incumbent Mitt Romney who has done all sorts of terrible things like causing the 2008 meltdown and outsourcing jobs to China. In Obama’s view, given the supposedly tranquil world abroad, we must try nation building at home, and thus concentrate on bold new initiatives like stimulus, infrastructure, green jobs, and federalized health care — none of which have been envisioned before, much less funded. And to the extent Obama has a concrete example, he points to efforts of the private oil sector to find more gas and oil despite, rather than because of, his own efforts. Conclusion? Obama himself apparently has given up on liberal ideas in lieu of Big Bird, binders, bull****ter, movie stars, and hip-hopsters, which prompts the question: does anyone believe in liberal ideology anymore — and if so, why?

It’s always been a big mystery to me. I can only conclude it is a child-like (adolescent, at best) belief in utopia that they never outgrew. In short order, it leads directly to dictatorship, attempts to “perfect” a Godless man, tyranny, and always ends in mass death of unimaginable dimension.

Liberalism is an elite person’s psychological investment in enjoying a guilt-free affluence.

Liberals don’t think; they emote.

That's why you can't have an intelligent discussion with a liberal. As soon as you lead them to the facts (even if by inductive questioning, where they reach the conclusion on their own) it's like hitting a brick wall. At that point, they resort to the usual tricks of name-calling, changing the subject, etc.

Why liberals think the way they do? The answer is found in Romans chapter one 18-32

Wow. I would really like to sit down with Hanson and Greenfield and ask questions and learn. Great thinkers and great writers.

The skills needed to keep a 7-Eleven viable in a rough neighborhood, I confess, dwarf those of the classics professor.

The person who inherited multi-generational wealth generally possesses one more thing: a network of connections to politicians and bureaucrats, accumulated over generations.

The bigger government is, the more powerful those connections become. Also, the person living off investments has various means of avoiding taxes on his investments. As Leona Helmsley famously said, "Only the little people pay taxes".

“The most fundamental fact about the ideas of the political left is that they do not work. Therefore we should not be surprise to find the left concentrated in institutions where ideas do not have to work in order to survive.”- Thomas Sowell

Nice screen name, tagline, and quote from Dr Sowell, who is a master at distilling powerful concepts into simple words.

It has to do with postures and gestures taking the place of real facts, with putting feelings and satisfying stances before real world consequences.

Do Bay Area greens really believe that they that will have sufficient water if they blow up the Hetch Hetchy Reservoir?

That makes it sound like a terrorist act. They do want the dam to be dismantled, though, and demolition usually involves explosives.

If you watch a Ken Burns documentary about John Muir or the National Park System, you might also wish the dam wasn't there, but the emotional reaction and the moral indignation has to be weighed against reality, not simply enjoyed in spite of practical consequences.

Liberals vote as they feel, not as they think.
