What began as an upbeat and raucous celebration in The City after the Giants’ World Series-clinching win Sunday in Detroit devolved into a chaotic scene of fights, vandalism and dozens of fires throughout San Francisco.
Citywide, 36 arrests were made, and two of the 23 felony arrests were on firearms charges.
Police Chief Greg Suhr said his department did not anticipate the destructive behavior, but said police have plans to ensure nothing similar happens at Wednesday’s parade for the team.
Suhr said the destructive behavior was “a one-up” on San Francisco’s celebration of the Giants’ World Series win over the Texas Rangers in 2010 and came as a surprise to authorities.
“There was a point in the night when the crowd changed and the real Giants fans went home,” police spokesman Sgt. Michael Andraychak said. “The people responsible for the damage most likely just took advantage of the win and used it as an excuse to be violent.”
Most of the mayhem, which lasted until early Monday morning, happened in the Mission district, but one of the worst incidents involved a Muni bus that was torched near Third and Market streets. The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency, which operates Muni, said it had invested approximately $1 million into the bus, which had been rehabbed and placed back into service last year.

People said there would be the same in Detroit if the Tigers had won but I don’t see it. Detroit is a great baseball town with a great baseball crowd.
Now if the Pistons were to win a championship it might be a different matter but that’s a whole different crowd.

The vusinesse community which currently exists in the Bay area deserves a better answer that that.
Oakland is right next door—they have been rioting & doing vandalism almost every night for the past year. It is to the point where the TV channels don’t even cover the events.
The Muni bus which was vandalized & burned:
Your community spend a MILLION DOLLARS for a transit bus? A MILLION DOLLARS & it was ‘just refurbished”??? What kind of fools are buying those busses on taxpayers money & what kind of savages are treating the busses in such a fashion that it just got a very expensive ‘refurbushing’???

Incompetent SOB. Anyone with even half a brain would have known this was coming.

However if the Tigers had won the Series would anyone have been able to tell the difference if Detroit Rioted, looted, and burned? :)

It would have been much, MUCH worse had Detroit won. I was there for the 1984 festivities.
However, given the state of Detroit, insurance could cover the entire city with $1.87 in damages.
Tigers are definitely on a long term upswing.
They actually contacted the ball far more than the Giants but the Giants played spectacular defense and have a deep bullpen.
what say the Baseball Commissioner tell the mayors of the host cities in both leagues that, on behalf of the businesses and resident of each city, celebration riots in your city will result in the loss of the baseball team??
I wonder what steps the mayors and police forces would then take to prevent the loss of their team?

Um, $1 million to rehab a bus?! How much do new busses cost?
Probably nnot allowed to buy new ones, but have to have them "rehabbed" through some graft-ridden union contract.
And CA wants to raise taxes.
