I followed Jim's advice and turned off a lot of stuff. It only took (literally) about 25 tries and 40 minutes, but it does run faster and it only times out about 80% of the time.
Yes, that's an improvement, considering that it takes three steps to compose, preview and post a response. And it times out at each step at least once.
