A KPIX news cameraman was punched and robbed during a live broadcast outside an Oakland high school, the latest in a spate of holdups targeting the media, police said Thursday.
Reporter Anne Makovec and cameraman Gregg Welk were on the air shortly after noon Wednesday outside Oakland Technical High School near the corner of 42nd Street and Broadway. They were at the school to do a story on the passage of Proposition 30, the tax measure preventing deep cuts to education.
As Makovec was finishing her report, police said, five men rushed up and grabbed a $6,000 camera from the tripod. Viewers saw the live picture being jarred and turned sideways for about two seconds.

Maybe I am too conspiratorial but this does not make sense. Why risk being filmed on live tv? Two vehicles? A Mercedes and lexus? It was a $6000 camera but if there are many(2 vehicles) and they drive luxury cars, robbing tv crews is not how they make a “living”. This has occurred a few times since June and the article says there will be protection sent with crews from now on. Not that I generally care much about the media but there is more to this, I wonder if threats have been made but it is being kept hushed by the request of law enforcement?

When one steals something, it is usually to trade or sell it for cash. What or where is the market for television station grade cameras and tripods? It seems a limited market that only serves that segment of the industry. The mooks in the inner city are happy with the videos they create with their cell phones or the little handhelds they can boost from Best Buy or WallyWorld. Who would pay cash for these cameras and tripods?
