INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - The investigation into an explosion on the south side of Indianapolis could take weeks, an official with Citizens Energy said on Sunday.

Two people were killed, and more than a dozen homes were damaged or destroyed after a large explosion rocked a south side neighborhood late Saturday night.

The Indianapolis Fire Department says the explosion happened in the 8400 block of Fieldfare Way, which is in a subdivision just off of Sherman Avenue south of Stop 11 Road.

Citizens Energy shut off gas to all the homes in the subdivision and investigated potential gas issues in the neighborhood. An official said the company had received no reports of an odor of gas in the area, and no gas leaks had been discovered as of early Sunday morning.

The best defense against this sort of thing is something called “sprawl”, which the left everywhere absolutely hates, because it involves spreading out a bit.

3-4 psi overpressure would do that, or worse. I agree, FAE likely accidental.

Funny how the employee of the gas company failed to mention that. When asked if there had been any problems he responded that there were no calls with dispatch. not sure his exact wording to know what kind of words he used.

Thank goodness she wasn’t home.

So, wonder if the Gas Company can be sued on this??

I'd say it's a virtual certainty. Expect to see the lawsuits within a couple of weeks.

Some years ago there was a home explosion about 25 miles from where we lived and I heard/felt it. This was over a rural, hilly and wooded area. I was surprised it traveled that far but it did.

“Anyone familiar with gas leaks? The concussive wave was reported to have been felt miles and miles away into Hancock county
Conspiracy websites are going crazy over this.”

I was sitting in my forth grade classroom when the entire back of the house across the street disintegrated in a gas explosion. It made quite an impression on me. That was in 1959 and to this day I’m always alert for leaks.

That’s one of the cool things about FR. We have such a vast network of Freepers we can often get inside information on things which is not avialable anywhere else.

But the earth sometimes leaks gas on it's own volition, and that stuff is odorless. I don't know if there is any natural gas in that part of Indiana.

there is indeed...Gas City Indiana is no more than 30 miles or so away...plenty of natural gas here

These houses are readily identifiable in the photo above. The top one is back to back with the explosion site at top center right. You can see the blue car in the bottom photo just in front of the fire engine at bottom center.

"because it involves spreading out a bit."

Certainly my thought.

Those houses are way too close for comfort (or safety).

Anyone familiar with gas leaks?

Yes. Have been at a number of them during my early engineering years. This could be gas. I am looking at the type of house construction and am not surprised at the damage.

I think it depends on whether the leak was in gas company lines- or homeowner lines. Or as others have said if the amount of pressure in the line was correct or not.
