APIn Ryan Lizza's story in this week's The New Yorker, Texas' newly-elected Republican Senator Ted Cruz worries about the changing electoral landscape --- and how it could get even less favorable for the GOP in coming years.
Cruz provides what must be a truly terrifying thought for the Republican Party:
"In not too many years, Texas could switch from being all Republican to all Democrat," he said. "If that happens, no Republican will ever again win the White House. New York and California are for the foreseeable future unalterably Democrat. If Texas turns bright blue, the Electoral College math is simple. We won't be talking about Ohio, we won't be talking about Florida or Virginia, because it won't matter. If Texas is bright blue, you can’t get to two-seventy electoral votes. The Republican Party would cease to exist. We would become like the Whig Party. Our kids and grandkids would study how this used to be a national political party. ‘They had Conventions, they nominated Presidential candidates. They don’t exist anymore.’”
Mitt Romney already faced a tough road to the White House through the electoral map this year, and the country's shifting demographics make the map an even bigger problem for the Republican Party in future elections.
Some Democrats think that Texas and Arizona could be the next to become swing states, and there were signs of a future Democratic invasion into these Southwestern states during the 2012 campaign, including San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro's keynote speech at the Democratic National Convention.
Cruz is right: Without Texas' 38 electoral votes, it would be virtually impossible for Republicans to win a presidential election. There is simply not a corresponding state that Republicans are targeting to go from blue to red.

This puts the chances for Texas secession in the dumpster.
The demographic trend is not our friend:
National numbers
white voters 1992: 87% of total
white voters 2012: 72%
Blacks vote dem > 95%
Hispanics 80%
Asians 70%
I did read somewhere within the past week that the projection is that TX will go blue within the next 4 to 6 years due to the influx of libs. And forget secesion(SP). Now one leaves the farm without permission and somebody ain’t granting it.

Texas going blue could follow the New Hampshire model.
There used to be a time when NH was conservative, a truly “Live Free or Die” state.
Then, Massachusetts residents slowly MOVED to NH and overwhelmed their residents.
Now NH have chosen to “die” instead of “Live Free”.
Similarly, California voters could do the same to Texas.
What can the Lone Star state do about it?

Texas has 3 million on Medicare and 4.5 million on Medicaid.
All the secession talk is bluster.
Texas needs to check state residence before admitting newcomers. The east and west coasters will flee their messes and destroy it at some point.
Refugees from “blue” states might keep the Longhorn State “red” as long as they leave their politics behind.
Add to that those crossing from Texas' southern border as well.
But it could be if we spent more time reaching out to these groups. Today there are very few conservative groups that actually reach out to these demographic groups.
Maybe it really is time to change electoral college.

While all this is true, George W. Bush got 40% of the vote in 2004 among hispanics, so the hispanic vote is not as locked up as the black vote.
The only way to keep Texas red is to shut down the border and run all the illegals out to other solid red states to dilute them. Or, send them packing south. Since the federales have no desire to enforce border security for obvious reasons (i.e. democratic voters), it is only a matter of time.
The time for electing a GOPer.. especially a conservative one .. is past. We fought the good fight, but we`re outnumbered by the takers.
Texas, like Colorado, Virginia and Florida before it, will indeed turn blue in time, barring a major influx of conservative arrivals from liberal states.
Like Rush says... you can`t beat Santa Claus. Amerika likes free stuff, and the dems are willing to engage in bidding wars in order to dole the goodies out to them.
In the wake of 9-11, there was a real chance to change our suicidal immigration practices. Unfortuanately we had open-border clown GW Bush as President at the time.
Well then, I look forward to hearing what Sen. Cruz has planned to stop this. I expect him to work hard to stop and then reverse the trend.
It easy to turn a state blue. They just have to have a 110% voter turn out.
By 2016, 2020 at the latest, Texas takes a hard swing left, courtesy of all of the illegals voting for free stuff. With a population over 50% mexican, and with the hispanic catholic crowd firmly in the back pocket of the democrats, Texas is royally screwed. Open borders and cheap labor are going to cost you dearly. Don’t believe me? Texas is just one step away from becoming another California.
