Gov. Chris Christie is warning New Jerseyans living in storm-wrecked towns that they're likely to see higher local property taxes to help pay for rebuilding.
Christie, .... said an exemption to the state's 2 percent tax cap law is emergencies like Sandy, which destroyed coastal towns, knocked out rail service and left 2.7 million households in the dark. While municipalities can expect federal reimbursement for most storm-related cleanup costs, residents will most likely foot the bill for rebuilding.
.....
New Jersey residents already pay the highest property taxes in the country, averaging $7,758 per household. The property tax cap law has slowed the rate of increase, but the storm coupled with stubbornly high unemployment and the weak economic recovery here has cast new doubt on Christie's proposal to phase in a 10 percent tax cut beginning in January.
Christie said he still supports the cut, but said he'll adjust the position if revenue losses from the storm turn out to be severe.
....
While Republicans and Democrats are likely to continue to disagree sharply over a tax cut, Christie said he and legislative leaders have pledged bipartisan cooperation in storm-related matters.

Somebody has to pay for Fatso’s doughnuts.
Ca$h gotta go somewhere. Maybe your "servants" ran off with it?
One of the attacks on the free market that the left has been using is that of attacking insurance companies for raising rates if you file a claim.
They use that as one of the reasons why the state needs to take over insurance.
Yet here the citizens of NJ pay their taxes to pay for the people and equipment to help them out if there is ever an emergency.
And now those liberals (YES, Christie, you are a gun-grabbing liberal), are saying they’ll need to raise property taxes.
Quite the hypocrisy and thoroughly expected.
Here’s a better idea... A tax holiday that would make it CHEAPER and MORE AFFORDABLE to rebuild. Possibly even better than it was and LESS LIKELY TO BE DESTROYED IN THE NEXT BIG STORM...
Caps used to drive the blazingly obvious point into their blunted, thick skulls.
What impressed me being a Peter Schiff/Thomas Sowell fan is that both NJ and NYC have price gouging laws which are really price control laws and both went to gasoline rationing.
The rationing cut the lines down some because there was some panic buying but it didnt bring in anymore gas.
These type of laws are very popular but I have never seen a poll that asks them :
Would you rather pay double (the prior price) for gasoline during a temporary shortage due to a hurricane or have none at all available for you to buy?
Is there any doubt now that Fat Bastard is going to turn Rat?
I’m with you. I don’t give a damn anymore. I’m done.
We’re more likely to get a bank holiday than a tax holiday.

He needs the money for a government bailout of Hostess. Can’t live in a world without Twinkies and Ho-Ho’s!
Of course they should pay for it. The alternatives are not repairing the damage at all or trying to get someone else (Uncle Sam, i.e. you and me) to do it.
Here’s an idea, don’t rebuild it.
States were Obama got a higher % of the vote than in 2008 and or Romney a lower % vote than McCain
Alaska the biggest offender by a few points (Cause McCain had Palin on the ticket and Gary Johnson got a lot of votes)
LA and MS (barley, even higher Black turnout I suppose)
New York (both saw their percentages decline, the margin slightly improved for us)
Maryland (Obama got a lower % and Romney did as well by an extremely small margin)
And New Jersey!! You suck NJ. Float away, drop the conservative Republicans off in Virginia and then float out into the ocean and sink. The new Atlantis.
Are you sure you don’t always invert letters? You should invite Dwyane Wade over so not only could you compare notes on inverted letters (his parents should have been arrested) but you’d have some hops to go with you barley. : )
I meant some hops to go with *your* barley. Ironic that I had a typo when making fun of your (serial) letter inversions.

The truth will always come out. Christie is a democrat.
And because you did I finally looked up what a petard was. :D
The Spanish word for firecracker is “petardo,” so from the first time I heard that someone had been hoist by his own petard I knew exactly what was meant.
