Santa Monica Forced To CANCEL Christmas After Atheist Campaigner Launches Protest Against Town's Holiday Decorations 18 November 2012

A California town has been forced to axe its Christmas decorations after an atheist protester objected to a 14-piece religious display in the town centre and set up his own booths mocking Christianity and preventing church groups from celebrating the holidays.

Officials in Santa Monica, California have snuffed the city's holiday tradition this year rather than intervening in the religious fight - prompting churches which have set up a 14-scene Christian diorama every year for decades to sue over freedom of speech violations.

Their attorney will ask a federal judge on Monday to allow them to reproduce the depiction of Jesus' birth, while the city aims to have the case throwen out.

Banned: A Nativity scene is seen with a protective fence along Santa Monica's shore last year, a scene which according to the city will not re-appear this year

'It's a sad, sad commentary on the attitudes of the day that a nearly 60-year-old Christmas tradition is now having to hunt for a home, something like our saviuor had to hunt for a place to be born because the world was not interested,' said Hunter Jameson, head of the nonprofit Santa Monica Nativity Scene Committee that is suing.

“Simple enough to have live nativity characters walk around the towne center saying, “God be with you.” Can’t arrest someone from walking around public streets.”

Excellent, that’s the spirit.

Churches with live nativities! Etc. Let’s go, Santa Monica. Don’t let this sourpuss dictate your holidays!

Christians should be forced into the closet? I don’t think so!

Go a bit further back they would have been rode out of town on a rail after being tarred and feathered.

This is so stupid. Santa Monica could just let the unhappy atheist have their booth and let all the religious displays up - they have to be viewpoint neutral in how they apportion public space. They just don’t want to deal with residents disagreeing with each other, which is typical bureaucratic cowardice.

I notice this is a story from the UK. Do they have this problem with atheists over there regarding religious displays? I know the problems with Muslims, but from a legal standpoint, do atheists have a case? They don't have a first amendment, nor separation of church and state there.

In fact since there IS a state religion, the C of E, can't they "legally" tell atheists to go pound sand?

People while you are out stocking up on ammo, buy some Jesus statues before they are banned completely. I am going to get one. Hubby and I may just set up a nice Christmas nativity scene this holiday & cause trouble. Where I live in Florida, we have to get permission for anything we do outside the property due to the rules. People who set the rules are from NY NJ/don't even live here maybe 2 months a year. I hate living in this concentration camp at times. That's what I call it when I am upset because.. I can't plant flowers, put up a flag or do fun things. Hubby and I are hoping to move (again) Not back to VA (cause of state incomes taxes) probably here tho into a conservative area of Florida with more normal people :)

City workers shouldn’t get the day off or any holiday pay.

Since this 'gentlemen' does not believe in celebrating Christmas, he should walk the walk as well as talk the talk... He should WORK on Christmas and Boxing Day, REFUNDING to his employer, any overtime pay that he would earn from working those days. It would be interesting to see then, how strong his protestations would be!

I am a Hindu, and I really enjoy Christmas. It reminds me of Diwali, celebrated by Hindu’s when the homes are adorned with lights, gifts are exchanged, tasty food dishes are cooked, families get together, and the God’s are given special prayers.

Back in the days of yore, the only people in America that had Christmas cancelled were the Puritans.

Now that gives me a thought...

The day is coming when Christians won’t be able to put decorations on their own lawns because they offend passerbys

Spirited: According to the Black Book of Communism, it was the ringing of church bells that served as the excuse for the unleashing of persecution, both psychological and physical. And when anti theists and atheist materialists seized full control of Russia the persecution, oppression, terror and murders began together with the looting, sacking and desecration of churches and imprisonment and/or murder of clergy.

Spirited: You have a generous, gracious spirit. When my family was stationed on Okinawa many years ago Christmas was an occasion of great enjoyment to them as well. From the lights to decorated trees and good food, they partook of it all with great good cheer.

Turkey was another matter all together. Our time there was marked by oppression.

Ever since Fonda and Hayden took over the city it’s been known as “The Peoples Republic of Santa Monica”!

They didn’t ‘take over the city.’ They were elected—just like Obama. Yuppie dems did it.
