ATKINS, Va. (AP) - Cabinet maker Merillat is laying off 280 employees at two manufacturing plants in southwest Virginia.
Officials for parent company Masco Cabinetry confirmed on Tuesday that it plans to close two facilities that make doors and panels for cabinets in Atkins in mid-January.

Elections have consequences. Virginia, you chose poorly.
A very good quality cabinet. I hope those craftsmen can find other work. Merrilat has a lot of competition as well, these days. Sad to see another good one close its doors.
Actually, they can’t really compete against Mexican competition.
Twinkies will be made in Mexico when the sale is finally done up. The unions helped to destroy any real competition in America, but this open-door deal for all products....has not been to our advantage.
Poor ol’ Marion. They can’t catch a break
Bttt
I really like that area. Our company did business with a company there that built trailers. Very nice people to work with. I’ve only driven through there but never had time to really stop. The countryside around there is beautiful.
Glad I sold my Masco stock years ago. Took a loss back then.
Poor management practices and highly overpaid owners.
The trailer plant is more or less across the interstate from the Merillat plant. There isn’t really much at Atkins.
Very sad, that plant is right off 81, I drive by it often.
More fallout from the Obama economy.....
