Spanish-language advertisements tout Latino-owned restaurants, garages, churches and used-tire lots, and banners lining the downtown streets proclaim, "Preserving our heritage — promoting our future."
But protesters who gathered downtown last month in Court Square, near the statue of a Confederate soldier, delivered a different message: "We Want Respect" and "Terry Johnson Stop Lying."
Alamance County Sheriff Terry Johnson's approach to fighting illegal immigration has raised tensions among Latinos in the community. A two-year investigation by the U.S. Justice Department, released in September, found that Johnson and his deputies had violated the Civil Rights Act of 1964 by engaging "in a pattern or practice of discriminatory policing against Latinos."
Federal officials recently canceled a federal-county immigration policing program, and the standoff is further dividing a community already split by the area's shifting demographics. Alamance County in 1990 had 736 Latinos, and whites made up 80% of the population. Latinos now number 17,000; whites have dropped to 66%.

In a nutshell, this explains the Obama “miracle” victory. Demographics is destiny. The chickens of the Reagan amnesty and Simpson-Mazzoli have come home to roost.
I agree. It drives me nuts hearing FReepers talking about legal immigration. If the remaining whites in this country don’t wake up, it’s really too late.
It appears as though Barry’s state controlled “media” is trying to use “Latino” as a politically correct term for illegal aliens. If I were a Latino or Hispanic born in America, I’d be pissed. The DemocRAT white boys at the DNC are lumping both catagories into the same pot.
I got an idea! Let’s pass the “Dream Act”, or some version of it, and win the Latino vote!

Let’s get real here - if you are a citizen - entitled to generous welfare benefits - why bust your butt at some minimum wage job? Better to sit at home and do a little work here and there - off the books - when things get tight.
For this we can thank LBJ’s “Great Society” programs and the Dimmocrats subsequent additions.
When I was a kid, dad had our house reroofed. All the workers were black, and they busted butt to get the job done. No more - the last two times I’ve done the same with my houses, there wasn’t a work of English spoken on the jobsite. I asked the contractor about it - the answer: “We just can’t get Americans to do this hard work anymore; they’re unreliable and would rather sit around or work at Mickey D’s.”
If the rules and regulations that hamper white businesses are ever as vigorously applied to the illegal businesses . . . .
This is why I truly believe that it is best if the US were to go bankrupt. We are like a magnet drawing all the world’s refuse to our shores. The worst thing is that we’re drawing these people to the US based on our government’s addiction to giving away free stuff. (Politicians buying votes).
We are borrowing money from China to give away free stuff to every illegal that crosses our border.
If there was no free stuff, the illegals wouldn’t come, and those that are here would go home.

Same here. Back when I was young the “Chicken Men” had this area in an economic stranglehold. You worked for less than minimum wage, because it was “agricultural” or you did not work and starved. You did not even make enough to leave the area to find good work.
Then some upstart name Sam Walton bought several bankrupt Ben Franklin stores, reincorporated as WALMART and started paying some decent wages.
People fled the Chicken Men as fast as they could to these new Walmart jobs. The Chicken processors refused to up the wages and started bringing in Mexicans to do the work.
Now the children of those first Mexicans have found better work as even they don’t want to work in the chicken industry, so the Chicken Men have upped their wages, and hire anyone who will work fresh from Mexico.
How about only doing business with companies that use e-verify?
I accuse the Justice Department of complete and total willful failure to enforce immigration laws.
I think thats inevitable now outside of some sort of CW II.
But either way our beautiful Country will become a shithole before the “Latinos” look elsewhere to improve their lot.
Is there any reason not to completely ignore the “Justice” Department?
And too lazy to shop around for a roofer who employs Americans.
There are such businesses out there.
One might consider it their civic duty, at least for those citizens who still hold respect for the Constitution.
Face the facts, folks. We are becoming a multicultural third-world country. The United States, as a constitutional republic, is on its death bed.
Can we resurrect it, ala Lazarus? Perhaps a phoenix rising from the ashes?
We’ll see.
