>>I have heard of folks renting houses in remote areas as a way of having an alternative location w/o the expense of buying a house.<<
Two friends of mine each tried that, and both times the local meth-heads broke in and squatted while it was unoccupied. Tore it all to hell.

One forty-five caliber automatic; two boxes of ammunition; four days' concentrated emergency rations; one drug issue containing antibiotics, morphine, vitamin pills, pep pills, sleeping pills, tranquilizer pills; one miniature combination Russian phrase book and Bible; one hundred dollars in rubles; one hundred dollars in gold; nine packs of chewing gum; one issue of prophylactics; three lipsticks; three pair of nylon stockings. I'm planning on having a pretty good weekend in Vegas with all that stuff.
Major Kong approved.

Definitely a good idea. However, I prefer lidocaine, even though it is Rx.

I'm semi-rural and have several good neighbors, so I'll bug in unless it's something like a tornado. Then, it'll be hell trying to convince the Mrs to leave the companion animals and farm animals.
I'd really like to build a root cellar for a situation like that, but the rocky ground won't permit it.

I'm rural. I've got what I need. I'm stayin’ put. Neighbors and I know how to control the access to our hollow.
That comment should have been taken as more thought provoking than snarky.....
Do you really believe that you will be allowed free access to those back roads etc. by the locals? Don't expect it in my neck of the woods....ain't gonna happen.
When the SHTF, I hope it is ONLY your sensitivities that are hurt. Depending on the ability to move freely is a loser.

We’re rural. Our neighbors are farmers. We know them well enough. We’re on the same page. We’ll be bugging in. I’d hate to live in a city, even suburbs, getting out will be a pita. We have a plan for our kids to head here. We can squeeze in 14 if need be. Our kids are all prepping.
We have an old fashion cellar for tornadoes. In a pinch, we could retro fit it for nuclear fallout. Have you seen the series “Jericho”? It’s pretty good. It’s on netflix.

agree with you. i aint running. too old. but prepared? oh yes.

better to stay put. too quick stuff will be shut down, accidents will happen, traffic jams you won’t get anywhere. sorry. that is what happens in the best of times. hunkr down, at least being at home you have a reason to fight your home and land and people you care about. you get over the first hump and you’ve got a real chance to make it.

I used to work in the interior of Mexico a lot. There is a lot of truth in your statement. Mexico isn’t just the border.
