Little Falls man describes 'finishing' teenagers with shots to heads

A man who killed two teenagers in his home in Little Falls on Thanksgiving Day told investigators he shot and wounded the two at close range before "finishing" them with shots to the head.

Byron David Smith, 64, was charged Monday, Nov. 26, in Morrison County District Court with two counts of second-degree murder without premeditation in the deaths of Nicholas Brady, 17, and his cousin Haile Kifer, 18.

Smith claims Brady and Kifer broke into his home and he was "fearful" they had weapons, according to the criminal complaint.

Humphrey Bogart said it best in "The African Queen" ... "You pays your money and takes your chance".

All the guy would have to tell me is that he felt that his life may have still be in danger and I would vote "innocent" all day long.

Of course if he just went "Charles Bronson" on 'em, well that's a horse of a different color.

There is nothing wrong with what this guy did. For all the SHTF enthusiasts out there you must wrap your minds around this. Perfect training exercise. All the people sitting around decrying the decline of civilization but yet are unwillingly to pull that trigger. Again and again and again.

I know what you are saying, but we aren't there yet.

One of the ironies of a declining civilization is that the civilized are supposed to abide by the rules until the civilization is gone.

While there are rules, we stick with them.

When the rules go away, things will be different and what we call civilization is done. Then we have a period of upheaval, and maybe we can get it back, utilizing brutal means (by the standards of the now-done civilization).

In some quarters, it is gone already, at least for short, localized events (like 'flash mobs').

The biggest difficulty will be in the transition.

As for these two, I can't say one way or the other. 'Cute' does not equal nice, and I have seen some sordid types use their looks to be even more sordid, banking on the 'cute=good' bit to get away with it.

I don't know enough about the parties involved to judge, one way or the other, but under the current set of rules, 'finishing off' the bad guys is considered bad form, at least legally.

And we are to believe this 18 year old girl just does it without even calling out for the guy who just went in ahead of her?

Perhaps she waited outside while he went into the house. Smith shoots the guy, puts the body in a tarp and drags it away. Then, not having heard the gunfire, and wondering where her cousin is, she goes in looking for him. They must have believed Smith was away for the holiday or something, and they would have the run of the place.

I wonder, if you were hiding outside the house, if gunfire in the basement would have been audible. According to Zillow, it's a 5082 square foot house. It defies belief that she would have gone into the basement knowing there was a guy with a gun inside.

On the other hand, maybe he got the drop on them, marched them down to the basement, and executed them. And then fed the cops a cockamamie story.

In either scenario, it also defies belief that the guy would turn himself in instead of simply letting the pair disappear, having disposed of their remains and taking his chances they didn't tell anybody their plan. He is apparently retired State Department security, so he obviously knows self-defense law.

The obvious answer is to use a large enough caliber to only require one round each.

Shotgun. No ballistics.

You just can't stop yourself can you?

LOL!

You are hilarious!

You have strung together more insipid and possibly drunken posts on one thread than I have seen in a while.

You are a master at making crap up on par with Joe Biden and I am just going to sit back and watch where your moth eaten brain leads you next.

“Self defense is what you do to save you or others.”

Sort of a side note, but if one is concerned with “immediately stopping the threat”, a .223 is probably not the most effective round.

I know enough about people to know there are plenty of people out there who don't have a gun beside there bed or under their pillow because they are afraid someone will break into their house and try to rob them. But because they WANT them to.

While there are rules, we stick with them.

While there are rules, we pantomime them.

crooks is crooks. guess the guy he shot is worth nothing.

Nope, that's not what I said.
Shooting the girl in the head just makes it worse to me, my feelings about it.
Like I said, if it went down the way stated, fry the bastard, even if it would have been just the 17 year old boy, he ain't human.

Figuring out how we’ll get more news on this ~ sinking feeling this guy’s going to the nut house and that’ll be the last we hear of it.

Nice to post the chipper, friendly-looking images of the teens who were BREAKING AND ENTERING the man’s home - a home that apparently had been broken into many times before.

Yes, this old codger is nuts. But I have some real concerns about why these teens were breaking into someone’s home, day or night.

This is also why you practice your marksmanship under pressure. one shot-one kill. It’s really hard to explain “finish ‘em off” shots, when the law clearly states that you stop when the threat stops.

Another picture of the male burglar, not looking so clean cut, making gang signs.

Note also that the girl was attending an alternative high school. These vary considerable, but are often used for "at risk" students with mental, psychological, and emotional problems; and those who have committed criminal offenses for which they are not currently incarcerated.

Yep Smith should be one of your heroes. Someone for you and your wife to look to and emulate. Maybe you can send him some of your advice when he is sitting in that jail cell.

Some people are just jackasses. You sir, are a complete jackass.

This is like the Trayvon case where the media posts an innocent looking picture of the perpetrator. Yeah the media would never twist a gun case to hurt gun ownership? Yes they would and they have as in the Trayvon case.A lot here are falling for the media spin and prosecutor spin. didn't expect that on a conservative site.

There are waanabees everywhere.

Part of being 'civilized' is that we all agree to abide by certain codes, standards, laws, whatever.

In a SHTF situation, are you going to squander your medical supplies on marauders who would be triaged out anyway? Nope. Harsh reality.

But we're not in a SHTF situation.

Yeah, there are sickos out there who might fantasize about whacking bad guys or being big bad gunslingers. There are sickos who do more than fantasize.

If the SHTF, they will be some of the first to go, and it's likely they'll take some good people with them.

The rest of us have wrapped our heads around at least a few fragments of what that SHTF situation will entail if it happens, and pray every day we can haul civilization back from the brink.

You have to stay alive to do that, but you have to stay civilized somewhere in your core being, too.

The only thing this guy did wrong was not let his lawyer do the talking. If your home was broken into 6 times it would push most people over the edge. Two white trash meth heads are dead, cry me a river.
